Customer Feedback
"I thought the course was extremely well-organized and formatted for the students. There were two input sessions in the morning, then the consultation, one-on-one, with the trainers relative to our teaching assignments and preparations. This was followed by lunch break and then the actual student teaching sessions, with peer and tutor feedback afterwards. The course information was chronologically, effectively and thematically presented. The quality of the trainers and their instruction/communication styles and methods was also exceptionally good - I felt that they demonstrated very well the communicative learning approach."
-Barbara Overman-
I would definitely and highly recommend this course to anyone who is serious about pursuing the TEFL field. I am most grateful for the opportunity to have experienced such a high quality program which demanded equally high expectations of itself as well as from its students!
Course Description
Course description
This is the most practical and thorough introduction to TEFL available in the world. It's designed for candidates who have no previous teaching experience in English, but it's also suitable for the individual who has some experience but no formal training in the TEFL field.
Over the course of four weeks and 120 hours of work, candidates will become familiar with the principles of successful teaching and begin to develop the practical skills that they will need to teach adult learners effectively. The training program includes teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of several focused written assignments.
Goals
This course enables candidates to: acquire essential subject knowledge and familiarity with the principles of effective teaching; acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners; and demonstrate their ability to apply their learning in a real teaching context.
Requirements
In order to complete the training and meet the course requirements, candidates must:
* Attend the entire course
* Complete a minimum of six hours of practice teaching
* Observe experienced TEFL teachers in classes with adults for at least six hours
* Maintain and submit a portfolio of all written assignments and materials related to practice teaching
Assessments
There are no final tests in the CELTA. Throughout the course, trainers continuously assess candidates in the two major components of their work:
* Teaching practice and lesson planning
* Written assignments
There are a total of four assessed written assignments, the word count normally being between 750-1000 words. The topics for these papers include: focus on the learner; language related tasks; language skills related tasks; and lessons from the classroom.
To assure that trainers worldwide are consistent in their assessment, each course requires that an outside Assessor, appointed by Cambridge, visits the course and ensures that all requirements / criteria set out by Cambridge are being met. The assessor normally visits during the final two weeks of the course and must approve final grades given by the trainers.
Requirements for Admission for CELTA
All applicants to the CELTA course must:
* be at least 18 years of age (20 is recommended)
* have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels
* have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching
* have a standard of education equivalent of that required for entry into higher education.
