Course Description

The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL) is one of the leading entry level TESOL or TEFL qualifications. The course is designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English to non-native speakers. The course will give you a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of contemporary English language teaching, and an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher.

The Trinity CertTESOL is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in the UK at Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework. It is also accepted by employers all over the world.

The main course components are:

Language Awareness
Before starting the CertTESOL course you will receive a pre-course study pack which covers English grammar and phonology. Although your level of language awareness and grammar will increase as a result of the course, the more self-study you can do before your course starts the better.

Teaching Practice
The CertTESOL is a highly-practical course and you can expect to spend at least 6 hours teaching real students. You will teach students at various levels in large and small groups to prepare you for the world of teaching EFL. Your teaching will be assessed by one of the course tutors and you will be observed by your peers. At the end of each teaching practice session you will take part in a group feedback session.

Foreign Language Journal
During your course can expect to receive 4 hours of foreign language training in either Russian or Turkish. This will give you the opportunity of learning a new language as a complete beginner. It will allow you to experience and assess language teaching techniques from a foreign student's point of view. You will be required to keep a learner journal detailing and analysing your experiences. This is a unique part of the CertTESOL course, and by reflecting on your experiences as a learner your own teaching will develop.

Student Profile
Another CertTESOL course requirement is to document a student profile. During your course you will record an interview with one of your students in order to examine their linguistic achievements and difficulties. You will be required to analysise their oral English and create a remedial programme and lesson to help your student overcome selected problem areas.

Materials Assignments
Towards the end of your CertTESOL course you will be asked to select two pieces of material that you will have used in your teaching practice. You will evaluate their effectiveness and write an evaluation on each one. One of these pieces of material is a communicative game.
