Customer Feedback
The course fulfilled every expectation I had. It was organized and provided me with every opportunity to become an excellent teacher.
Rio de Janeiro is a fantastic city. The city is fun and exciting and there is always something to do. Both the bus and metro service to and from Centro were very inexpensive. I really loved my time in Rio and plan to return soon.

Course Description
Course Description
In its over 20 years of experience, the school has worked with thousands of satisfied students who enjoy its approach to teaching language. The school put that experience to work for you in the TEFL training program, an intensive month-long, 120-hour course that has six hours of practice-teaching time and six hours of observation time. As a graduate of the TEFL program, you'll come away from the course with a concept of the practical side of ESL/EFL instruction.
Goals
- At least 6 hours of observation of classes taught by experienced professionals
- At least 6 hours of practice teaching with real language learners from the local community
- Trainers who will guide you through every step of the way including observing your peer teaching and practice teaching
- Instruction and practice in teaching the four basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and subskills (vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar)
- An introduction to classroom management, including such issues as error correction and giving instructions
- Instruction in how to prepare formal classroom lessons, as well as what games, activities, and songs are appropriate and effective
- How to use DVDs in the classroom, the latest in computer software for TEFL, and what e-learning is all about
- An introduction to TEFL testing so that you are familiar with the TOEFL, TOEIC, University of Michigan Tests, and others
- An introduction to teaching Business English, a very critical (and often lucrative) area of major interest to many students in today's market
- An introduction to the fascinating world of intercultural relations and how culture can affect language acquisition
- Professional development guidance and active assistance in job searching and job placement.
Requirements
In order to complete the training and meet the course requirements, trainees must:
- Attend the entire course
- Complete a minimum of six hours of practice teaching
- Complete a minimum of six hours of observation of experienced teachers
- Maintain and submit a portfolio of all written assignments and materials related to practice teaching
Assessment
There are no final tests in the TEFL. Throughout the course, trainers continuously assess trainees in the two major components of their work:
- Practice teaching and lesson planning
- Written assignments
Over the course of the program, each trainee will prepare lesson plans for, and teach, a minimum of six hours of classes with real language learners. These classes are observed both by trainers and fellow trainees; the trainers'evaluations constitute part of the final grade.
There are a total of two graded written assignments, each normally being between around 1000 words long. The topics for these papers include language awareness and professional development.
Evaluation and Training Report
Upon the completion of the program, the training staff will issue you an evaluation and training report that will outline your accomplishments during the TEFL training and your potential for teaching in the TEFL field. This may be included on your resume for future employment references.
TEFL Admission Requirements
All applicants to the TEFL course must:
- be at least 20 years of age by completion of the course (18- and 19-year-olds are accepted at the center's discretion)
- have competence in both spoken and written English, such that it permits them to follow the training with no problems
(non-native speakers must communicate in English with few or no mistakes, have a level of fluency roughly equal to a score of 280 on the computer-based TOEFL, and have an oral interview with a member of the admissions staff before enrolling)

School Details - Rio de Janeiro
The Training Center
The school has a long history in Brazil, with over 20 years of experience in the country. Its center in Rio combines old and new, offering fully modern facilities in a historic downtown building.
One of the school's primary advantages is location, being close to many bus stops, only two blocks from the subway, and within walking distance of dozens of local attractions. The completely renovated center includes nine classrooms with audiovisual equipment, central air conditioning, phone and fax services, and access to e-mail and the Internet
The City
Rio is a place of dreams: it's intriguing, exotic and fun. The picture postcard views from Sugar Loaf, the colour and chaos of Carnaval, the swinging of samba hips, the beautiful bodies on Ipanema, the tiny fio dental bikinis..there's seemingly no end of images for this captivating city on Brazil's sparkling Atlantic coast. Hardly surprising then that the locals, or cariocas, call this the cidade maravilhosa, or marvellous city. With some ten million of them, though, the city does have its problems, and the stark reality of the overcrowding and disparity of wealth is no more obvious than in the surrounding favelas, or shanty towns. Stick to the better trodden paths of districts like Leblon, Botafogo and Flamengo, however, and you just can't fail to be swept up in the hustle and bustle and sheer hedonistic lifestyle of the place!
Accreditation
The school's courses have been accredited by ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education andTraining), an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. ACCET has investigated and approved the school's administrative practices, curriculum, headquarters, and staff credentials. The accreditation is your guarantee that you are dealing with a reputable organization whose qualifications have been externally validated.
