Course Description
The Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Adults)
Who is DELTA for?
You may be a graduate, or already hold an initial teaching qualification, and are considering DELTA as a route to further career progression. The qualification is ideal if you wish to extend your professional experience and accept new responsibilities as it not only demonstrates a commitment to the profession, but is also proof of your ability.
A DELTA qualification is required for posts such as "Head of Studies" in a language school.
DELTA is modular:
- Module One focuses on the background of teaching and learning
- Module Two focuses on developing professional practice
- Module Three focuses on a specialist option (e.g. English for Special Purposes)
There is an exam at the end of Module One. Both Module One and Module Three can be taken as distance learning options with this school. Module Two takes place in Strasbourg and is divided into three blocks of nine days each.
Module One:
The course starts 4th April and runs for 5 months. You can join Module 1 up until the end of June.
The Module One final exam will be held in Strasbourg in December 2012.
Module One is delivered as a tutored online learning package comprising
- 8 seminars
- 18 online tests
- 1 mock exam
Price for Module One is EUR 800
Module Two:
This module will be divided into three periods, each lasting nine days and all held in Strasbourg. Module Two takes place in total over 25 days. (The dates are designed to fit in with the various schedules of school teachers and univeristy lecturers here in France) The dates are:
Saturday 20th August - Sunday 28th August
Saturday 7th January 2012 - Sunday 15th January 2012
Saturday 12th May 2012 - Sunday 20th May 2012
As you can see, the first session of Module Two will in fact take place before the end of Module One and will include feedback on the Module One mock exam. This is deliberate to help candidates start making the transition from Module One which is purely theoretical, to Module Two which is putting the theory into practice. The cost of the three session of Module Two (incl. cambridge fees) is EUR 1,500.
Module Three:
Can be done at any time that suits you. You can also decide how long you want to take to do this module, as you have to produce a short dissertation for which you will be assigned by a distance tutor.
Price for Module Three: EUR 400 including the Cambridge registration fee.
Accommodation Options
The school has arranged an excellent accommodation deal with a residence on the very elegant Quai St. Thomas in the old centre of Strasbourg for EUR 450- EUR 545 for one room for one month. A small communal kitchen is also available with the room.
The Quai St Thomas is close enough to the centre to be able to go to the classes every day by bicycle.
Alternatively the school can help you find Bed & Breakfast accommodation in the city.
School Details - Strasbourg
The training centre is a very modern building just 1 km from the city centre. Equipped with comfortable teaching rooms, a media centre, library and cafeteria, it provides the perfect environment for TEFL study.
Strasbourg is the destination for exploring the political and economic issues which influence language learning in Europe today. On the frontier between France and Germany, home to the magnificant new European Parliament building, the language unit of the Council of Europe, and the European Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg is the city where Eurepean policies are made.
It is also a vibrant, multicultural city which has long struggled with the conflicting interests of Europe's two major languages, French and German. As English becomes more and more the language of commerce and international communication in Europe, there is nowhere more interesting than Strasbourg to watch this happen.
Strasbourg is also the capital of the Alsace region of France. Beautiful forests, mountains and vineyards are its characteristic features. The quality of life here is very good, and during your stay in Strasbourg you will be able to sample those uniquely French pleasures of life: wonderful food, beautiful scenery and, at least here in the Alsace, a not too hurried approach to the question of good living.
Help for Jobs
France is a country with lots of possibilities for trained EFL teachers. If you want to stay in the Strasbourg area after your CELTA, the CIEL would be very happy to look at your CV as they are the biggest recruiter of language teachers in the city.
The school also personally knows the heads of all the language schools in this area of France, and across the border in Germany. If you do your CELTA here you are much more likely to be employed than if you come from outside, from the UK for example.
If you are interested in DELTA, as language policy for Europe is created in Strasbourg, there is no better place to come and do serious language research. The school has good contacts with the language policy unit at the Council of Europe and language research units at the Strasbourg and Karlsruhe universities.
