Course Description
Course Content
Contact hours are divided into input and teaching practice. Input is made up of methodology, looking at such things as: Presentation of language (structure and vocabulary); Practice of these; Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking; the role of the Teachers and Learners; Error and Correction: Use of the Blackboard, Visual Aids amongst others.
There are 5 core components:
1. Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context;
2. Language analysis and awareness;
3. Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing;
4. Planning and resources;
5. Developing teaching skills and professionalism

Teaching Practice:
There are two hours of teaching practice each day. The participants on the course are divided into two groups for teaching practice purposes (Usually 2 groups of 6 trainees). You will teach two different levels and be seen by at least two different tutors.
Lesson Planning and Co-operation:
Basically you are assessed on your Teaching Practice and written work although, in a sense, your whole attitude and approach to teaching and the course is assessed. A very important aspect of the course is the co-operation and liaison within your TP group at the lesson planning stage.
Teaching Practice Feedback:
Feedback is an important aspect. This will usually takes place after the lesson. It may be that your lesson didn’t go exactly as you planned but this isn’t always a bad thing (provided it doesn’t happen too regularly!). Teaching in front of 12 students, four colleagues and a tutor, who are all looking at you, can be quite stressful - and then they have the audacity to suggest alternatives! However this is an important part of the learning process which can't be ignored.
As per University of Cambridge requirements, applicants must:
a) be at least 18. It is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at the Centre’s discretion
b) have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels
c) have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching.
In order to ascertain your suitability to do the course, you have to complete an application form, a pre-interview task and attend an interview. Although interviews are normally face-to-face, the school can arrange telephone interviews in exceptional circumstances.
Accommodation Options
Although the school doesn\'t have an Accommodation Officer, they will be happy to help you find suitable accommodation.
All you need to do is let them know when you apply and give them as many details as possible about the type of accommodation you want (local family, hostel, hotel or self-catering shared accommodation) and your budget.
They will give priority to your application and if a place on the course is offered, they will contact you directly to discuss the options available.
School Details - Catania
The school is a small and friendly school which was created in 1997. They are located in the heart of Catania and at the foot of Mount Etna. The school accredited as a Teacher Training Centre by the University of Cambridge for CELTA courses and by the Italian Ministry of Education for professional development courses for Italian state school teachers.
They are members and the headquarters of AISLi (Italian Association of Language Schools) who is also a member of EQUALS.
Towards the end of the course, there is a session on Professional Development in which advice is given on how to find work not only in Catania, but in the world at large. Recruitment takes place all the year round, but October and January are the busiest not only in Catania but in Italy and Europe in general. Don't forget that the CELTA is recognised all over the world so you needn't limit yourself to Catania!
