What does the course involve?
A 3 day TEFL training course :
. teaches you the principles of effective teaching
. provides a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
. gives you hands-on teaching practice
. builds your confidence.
There are five main units of learning:
. Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
. Language analysis and awareness
. Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
. Planning and resources for different contexts
. Developing teaching skills and professionalism.
You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination.
Teaching practice
Students will teach, and observe other students teaching for a total of six hours, using fellow students in place of real EFL students.
What is the actual format of the course?
3 day TEFL training courses are run over three week days - Monday to Wednesday.
The courses are held in university/college classrooms. Venues are centrally located, and easily accessable by public transport and car. Parking is free of charge or low priced.
There are a maximum of 14 students on each course. The course provider is keen to ensure that their students receive the best possible training and this can only be achieved with small class sizes.
There is at least one trainer on each course, while on some courses we use two or more trainers - often when we are training new trainers.
The course is split into modules, all which must be attended to gain certification. Full details of what is in each module can be viewed here.
The course is a mixture of lectures, free activities, controlled activities, teaching preparation and practice and role play. We aim to keep TTT (Teacher Talk Time) to a minimum since this is the most effective way of students learning a great deal in a short period of time and this is one of rules of teaching when you become an EFL teacher.
Tea and coffees are served throughout the course, with lunches being available either onsite or close by.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be at least 16. It is generally recommended that students should be aged 18 or over, but students aged between 16 and 18 can be accepted at the course provider's discretion.
Applicants must have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels.
Applicants must have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers, attend all modules of the course and successfully complete the teaching practice.
School Details - London Islington
The 3 Day TEFL courses are held in the Rocket Complex at London Metropolitan University, North Campus. Please note you cannot book the course at the complex.
London North campus has developed over the past 100 years into a modern, forward-looking centre with a reputation for widening access into education.
Directions
The Rocket Complex is located next to the Student Union on Holloway road.
Road
You should head for the Holloway Road. The Rocket Complex is very obvious and at 166-220 Holloway Road. There is no parking on site so we suggest that you park close to a tube station and take the tube to Holloway Road.
Bus
The 271, 43 , 393 and 153 buses serve the Rocket Complex.
Train
Holloway Road is a two minute walk away, while Highbury and Islington is a 6 minute walk.
