Course Description
This is a fun and exhilarating introduction to the world of TEFL. Its aim is to equip you with the confidence you need to take your first steps into teaching English. The course may be short (two 9 hour days) but it will cover a lot of ground in some depth. So hold onto your hats as it's going to be a rollercoaster ride.
What to expect
First, we will explore some of the ways in which the brain processes language. This will give us a basis for understanding what's going on in a language learner's head when they're in your classroom.
If you've ever had the experience of trying to learn a new language then you'll know all about the mental challenges of operating in another tongue.
We'll also look at some of the techniques that teachers of English as a foreign language use and we'll answer some basic questions such as:
- How can you teach English without using your students' first languages?
- How do you correct students' pronunciation?
- What kinds of activities should we give students?
- How do you get students working collaboratively?
- What effect does the learning environment have?
The course is highly interactive and includes many practical tasks, giving you a real chance to develop your teaching skills. Topics covered include:
- Language, and how the brain deals with it
- Grammar and how to teach it
- How to introduce new language to students
- Teaching Pronunciation
- Classroom observation and feedback
- Why students make mistakes and how to correct them
- A 'micro' teaching practice session
- Designing and using language activities
Home study
On a short course there's a lot to digest, so you will be required to do some reading on the first evening of the course. Details can be found on your timetable which you'll be given when you arrive, but comprises one reading, one research task (normally grammar related) and a short (3 minute) presentation to prepare for day two of the course.
