Course Description

Forget school. Forget university. This is the course that you will remember for the rest of your life. It's fun, it's fast paced and, yes it's hard work. But it's worth it. Being a good teacher is good, but being a great teacher is, well great.

Week 1 This is an exciting week when everyone gets to know each other. It's full of new experiences for everyone so relax, get rid of your inhibitions and enjoy yourself.
You'll explore: a) the basic principles and practices of language, language learning and language teaching, b) different approaches to presenting language, grammar and phonology, c) ways to use the classroom creatively, d) what classroom activities are most effective and, e) what's actually going on in a student's brain while you're teaching them.

Weeks Two to Four We have various sessions during these weeks. They'll be delivered as Interactive Workshops. These are always a very interesting and engaging way to learn. Subjects we'll cover are: a) using texts and voice recordings in class, b) Second Language Acquisition applications for the classroom, c) Other approaches to presenting new language, d) error correction, e) further language awareness, g) teaching young learners, h) using video, I) task-based instruction, j) Humanistic approaches, k) testing and assessment and l) classroom management.

Teaching Practice You'll also get some invaluable teaching practice in a safe and supportive environment. The lessons will be planned by you, but don't panic: you'll be given tons of help from our very experienced, highly-qualified and very friendly tutors.
Lessons start in Week Two when you'll teach four thirty minute lessons.

In both Weeks Three and Four, you'll teach two one our lessons.

Your Tutor will give you verbal and written feedback after every lesson. Your colleagues will chip in too. But don't worry feedback is always given in a collaborative and supportive manner. We're all in this together.

Written Work You will also be given four written assignments on the course: a) the Language Learner Profile, b) The Unknown Natural Language report, c) ongoing Teaching Practice Evaluation, and d) a Materials Assignment.
These vary in length from 1,000 to 3,000 words. But once again don't panic. You'll receive you loads of support and guidance.
Finally (phew!) you'll have a take-home exam towards the end of the course. It's designed to help you bring together all the strands of the course.

Mystery Language You'll also receive four hours of instruction in a language that's completely unknown to you. Why? Because there's no better way for you to experience how your future students will sometimes feel. Vulnerable. Baffled. And excluded. Bless them.

The building has been beautifully restored to provide eight light and airy classrooms equipped with modern teaching aids such as interactive white-boards. Classrooms either overlook the green and leafy square to the front or The Duke of Bedford's private gardens to the rear.

Students have free use of an Info Lab equipped with eight laptops connected to super-fast broadband. The school also stocks the full range of course books with discounts on normal prices.
