Course Description

The Trinity Cert TESOL is one of the two most widely recognised EFL teaching qualifications.

The experience of standing in front of a class and being observed, demands a great deal of preparation. For this reason the school has devised its own Distance Learning Preparatory Pack which should enable you to begin your four week course with confidence and an understanding of Phonetics and Language Awareness.

The distance learning preparatory pack

Two components which require extensive study are Phonetics and Language Awareness and the pack includes some study guides that will provide trainees with the opportunity to master some of the theory before starting the course. This will allow more time for concentrating on the teaching practice.

The four week intensive training course

-Teaching Methods, Language Awareness and Phonetics
This is the theoretical part of the course, taught in a series of daily lectures and seminars.

-Learning a New Foreign Language (L2)
It is essential that trainees gain an insight into the difficulties of learning a foreign language from the learner's viewpoint. This part of the course introduces an unfamiliar language as well as a variety of teaching methodologies. Trainees are requires to keep a journal in which the record their learning experiences.

-Individual Student Profile
Each trainee will be assigned a foreign student of English to assess. The aim is to discover through an in-depth analysis, the various factors, such as mother tongue and/or cultural background.

-Observed Teaching Practice
Trainees progress from peer teaching to teaching small classes of foreign students. The lesson preparation is discussed with tutors, who also observe and assess the lessons.

The centre has been preparing students for the Trinity College TESOL Certificate since 1991, and attribute their high success rate is to:

- Small Classes. They accept an average of 8 students on each course (Max 12 students)
- A careful vetting procedure. They will not accept you on the course unless they feel you are likely to pass.
- Their pre-course distance-learning pack which enables you to master a lot of the theory before you embark on the course itself.
