Preparation
Target Groups
The course is designed for non-native teachers involved in primary education.

A preparation pack is sent to participants on enrolment. Before the start of the course, participants will be asked to complete a pre-course questionnaire and a pre-course task which will enable the trainers to focus more specifically on the exact needs of the participants - the attached programme, therefore, shows a sample timetable for this course. The trainers will review the pre-course task during the course.

Objectives
This course is designed to help primary specialists teach English in the primary classroom. The course will:
* provide plenty of opportunity to improve fluency and knowledge of English
* focus on language teaching methodology
* allow participants to experience different aspects of life and culture in the UK

The aim of the course is to help participants to develop their:

English Language by
* practising English in a variety of social and professional contexts
* developing your understanding and knowledge of the English language
* gaining confidence and fluency for speaking English in the primary classroom

Teaching methodology by
* selecting and adapting English songs, games and stories appropriate to the primary classroom
* selecting, devising and adapting materials

Methodology The focus of the course is very firmly on developing practical ideas for the classroom. Input will be provided in a variety of ways (including seminars and practical workshops, trainer summaries and demonstrations) that take account of the course participants different learning preferences and styles. Participants will be encouraged to share their own ideas and experience, and develop networks with participants from other countries.
There will be opportunities throughout the course to exploit the UK context by collecting relevant authentic materials, making contact with native speakers and taking part in the school's social and cultural programme, and outings.

Follow up Participants will be asked to work on a project during their stay to allow them to reflect on the new ideas they have experienced and on how they will incorporate them into their teaching. On the final day participants will present their own project plans and discuss this within their group. Follow up support is available via email and participants will be encouraged to report on their progress.

The English Language Centre, founded in 1962, is an independent non-profit making charitable educational foundation committed to promoting excellence in the teaching of English as a foreign language. Originally set up by the University of Stockholm, ELC has a long tradition of providing quality English language teaching to international students and has developed into one of the leading independent language schools in the UK.

History of Teacher Training and Development Courses for Overseas Teachers
ELC has a long history of providing quality teacher training and development courses for native and non-native teachers of English, from the 1970s until the present day.

In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s ELC welcomed over 1000 Swedish teachers on closed group in-service training courses funded by the Swedish Board of Education. Courses ranged from Life and Culture to Language Development and Methodology.

Since 1973 we have cooperated with Professor Reinhold Freudenstein, Professor at the Department of Education and former director of the Informationszentrum fuer Fremdsprachenforshung (IFS) at Philipps University of Marburg, in providing a variety of courses for teachers of English at primary and secondary school level.

In addition to the development of overseas teachers, ELC has always had a strong commitment to the training of native teachers, from running RSA Certificate courses in the 1970s to helping set up the current Cambridge ESOL DELTA course in Brighton.

Recent Teacher Training History
Since 2000, we have provided a range of teacher development courses that have been attended by English teachers from all over the world. These have included:

 English in The Primary Classroom
 Teaching English to Young Learners.
 Content and Language Integrated Learning/Content Based Teaching
 Developing Supervision Skills for Academic Managers and trainers
 Teaching Business English
 Language, Methodology and Culture

In 2006, nearly 100 primary teachers from around the world attended our teacher development course, English in the Primary Classroom.

We have also provided tailor-made courses for regional governments and organisations, including courses for:

 primary and secondary teachers for Staatliche Akademie fur Lehrerfortbildung in Donaueshingen, Germany

 more than 100 adult education teachers for the Volkshofschule in Bremen, Germany, from 2004 to present

 55 secondary school teachers on Content and Language Integrated Learning for the Basque and Rioja regions in Spain in 2006 and 2007
