Course Description

The CELTA course leads to the internationally recognised qualification: the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). It provides speakers of English with initial training in teaching English as a foreign language, though the course is also suited to those who are already in the profession, but who have no formal or practical teaching qualification. The syllabus, grading criteria and other aspects of the course are set by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).

The course takes place over 10 weeks on Fridays (10.00-18.30) and Saturdays (9.00-17:15). Please note that over and above the contact time, you can expect to spend additional time on lesson planning, liasing with fellow trainees, completing written work and observing experienced teachers.

Course components:

Teaching Practice
TP takes up about half of the course time and is seen, by the majority of candidates, as the most valuable component of the course. Teaching is conducted in small groups of 5-6 trainees, each with a supervising tutor. Each trainee teaches for a total of at least six hours with graded classes of students. Teaching practice includes guided preparation, individual reflection as well as a group oral feedback session.

Seminars
There are two 90 minutes seminars every day, run by one of the course tutors. They are typically highly interactive and cover many important aspects of teaching, for example: classroom management, how to teach grammar, how to help students with pronunciation.

Written assignments and lesson preparation
This is done mainly outside the course contact time and individual consultation time with a tutor is built into the programme.

Observations
Each trainee is scheduled to see a total of 6 hours of experienced teachers with their regular classes. This time is meant to give candidates a flavour of what a real EFL classroom looks like and see a variety of teaching styles.

Grading and tutorials
The grading system is transparent and follows the Cambridge ESOL criteria. The assessed components are: lesson planning skills, classroom skills, self-awareness and professional attitude. Upon successful completion candidates receive a Cambridge ESOL certificate and detailed report from the centre. The possible grades are: Pass, Pass B, Pass A and Fail. Candidates' progress is discussed with them during two one-to-one tutorial meetings which take place during the course.

And finally, this is how the Cambridge CELTA assures quality control:
All centres are subject to approval by UCLES, and have to maintain standards in order to retain this approval. If a centre is failing to meet the required standards, approval to run course will be withdrawn by UCLES. Similarly, it is not uncommon for institutions to have their application to run CELTA courses turned down by UCLES. Every CELTA course is moderated by an external assessor. Every centre is allocated a Joint Chief Assessor who monitors standards at the centre. Each CELTA trainer has to be approved by UCLES (which includes meeting UCLES requirements re teaching experience and qualifications) and has to undergo a lengthy induction process. All the above contribute to the excellent reputation that the Cambridge CELTA enjoys.

Help for Jobs

The course tutors and staff are able to provide a great deal of useful job and career advice during and after the CELTA course. These services include:

- 3 course hours dedicated to the job search, CV writing, and finding the right schools
- Personalized job hunting tutorial after the first week of the course
- Recommendations of "match" schools
- Up-to-date job board
- Continued email support for three months after course

While we try our best to assist trainees in their job search, it is our policy to never "guarantee" jobs to trainees. While many of our competitors advertise guaranteed job placement, we feel this is the wrong approach. Offering guaranteed job placement tends to attract less committed students, and it is in the best interests of the school and our students that each trainee is serious about the course. In addition, if someone does not complete the course requirements, we would not feel comfortable placing them in a position.

Based on previous experience, the vast majority of those who successfully complete the CELTA course have very little difficulty finding a job--and we are committed to preparing each student to find and land the job that is best for them.
