Course Description

Description of Course The course is for non-native secondary and adult teachers who wish plan or deliver ELT programmes and learn the latest teaching techniques. There is a focus on current methodologies and practical teaching skills.

Who is the course suitable for?

 Non-native secondary and adult teachers engaged in planning and/or delivering ELT programmes
 Non-native teachers of English who wish to update their English language, develop their confidence in using the language, and expand their vocabulary and range of expression
 Participants should have a minimum language level corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework

Course Objectives
- To 'brush up' and improve your competence and confidence in English
- To update your methodology, management and practical teaching techniques and skills
- To examine and reflect on your own approaches and attitudes to teaching and learning
- To become more aware of what you and others do in the classroom
- To discuss and share ideas, problems, methods and techniques with peers from other parts of the world

Language enrichment The aim of the morning sessions is to develop your language skills so that you will feel more confident teaching in English. The sessions aim to develop your language skills with a particular focus on speaking and listening, extend your vocabulary, grammatical and functional knowledge, and also to improve your knowledge of pronunciation.

Teaching techniques In the afternoon sessions, participants will experience a variety of teaching techniques, materials, devices and procedures designed to help students acquire language. There is a focus on current methodologies and practical teaching skills that participants will evaluate for effectiveness and also discuss ways of adapting these to fit in with different teaching contexts.

Outcomes
- Participants, having reflected on their own classroom experience and beliefs as teachers and learners, will be more aware
of their own strengths and weaknesses in the classroom.
- Participants will have a greater awareness of current methodologies and this will be reflected in their practical teaching skills.
- Participants will have more ideas on how to present and practise a variety of teaching points in the classroom.
- Participants will have a greater awareness of their students' strengths and weaknesses within the classroom and how these should be dealt with in practical terms.


Content of the teaching methodology component
The contents of each course will vary as it is negotiated between the trainer and course participants at the start and also during the
course. It will thus reflect the needs and interests of the course members. A maximum of 8 students are placed in a class according to their command of English, which is tested on arrival. All students enrolling on the methodology course are required to have at least an upper-intermediate level of English.


Programme of the course
17.5 hours per week of language enrichment (09:00 - 13:00) This includes :

- 5 hours per week of Spoken Performance workshops (09:00 - 10:00)
- 12.5 hours per week of skills lessons (10:15 - 11:15 / 11:30 - 13:00)

Spoken Performance Workshop Students are set tasks that challenge them to develop their speaking skills across a range of different everyday situations and experiment with their newly acquired language.

Skills lessons A structured curriculum which integrates grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation with the four main skills area of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

10 hours of Teachers Methodology (14:00 - 16:15)

Please note that the methodology component has content that may often be usefully adapted to incorporate the needs of each specific group.


Certificates
All course participants will receive 2 reports and a diploma at the end of their course. One report deals with the language component of the general English course and the other, the teaching methodology component. Your report will clearly state attendance and the diploma can state total hours if necessary.


Accommodation Options

Homestay accommodation is offered on a half-board basis with the option of both standard and en-suite rooms.
In addition to the course programme, a variety of social and cultural activities are available to participants throughout the week, helping them to get to know Scotland.

Homestay accommodation - GBP 150.00 per week (single room, half board)
En-suite homestay accommodation - GBP 250.00 per week (private bathroom, single room, half board)
