Course Description

Description of Course
The course is aimed at experienced, non-native teachers who wish to improve or update their knowledge of and skills in English and
who also wish to learn the latest teaching techniques. This course is aimed at teachers of adult or secondary students. There is a focus on current methodologies and practical teaching skills. This course offers 17.5 hours of teaching methodology classes in a closed group.
*All students are required to have at least an upper-intermediate level of English

Course Objectives
- To encourage participants to reflect on their own existing classroom experience, both as teachers and as learners.
- To encourage them to consider their own personal theories, beliefs and assumptions about the learning and teaching process.
- To help them to become more aware of possible alternative approaches to particular teaching points.
- To help them develop strategies for self appraisal.
- To extend their awareness of ideas and techniques.
- To encourage them to share their own experience, knowledge and techniques with their peers.
- To encourage them to extend and develop their own teaching methods.


Outcomes
- Participants, having reflected on their own classroom experience and beliefs as teachers and learners, will be more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses in the classroom.
- Participants will have a greater awareness of a range of teaching techniques and this will be reflected in their practical teaching skills.
- Participants will have more ideas on how to present and practise a variety of teaching points in the classroom.
- Participants will have a greater awareness of their students' strengths and weaknesses within the classroom and how these should be dealt with in practical terms.


Content of the teaching methodology component
The contentsof each course will vary as it is negotiated between the trainer and course participants at the start and also during the
course. It will thus reflect the needs and interests of the course members. However, the course is based around the following components:
- Teaching: analysis of the participants' assumptions and beliefs about teaching and learning; analysis of the type of learner they are.
- Speaking: teaching pronunciation; reasons for speaking; communication activities
- Listening: comparison of L1 and L2 listening skills; L2 listening problems; background problems; listening activities and tasks.
- Vocabulary: what is vocabulary learning; activities and techniques for teaching and learning vocabulary.
- Reading: comparison of L1 and L2 reading skills; L2 reading problems; reading tasks.
- Writing: reasons for writing and their implications for the classroom; the route to writing; correcting writing; task ideas.
- Grammar: approaches to grammar; ways of presenting structures; activities for practising grammar.
- Error Analysis: approaches to correction; types of error; helping students to correct their errors.
- Songs: using and exploiting songs in the language classroom.
- Classroom management : effective interaction; potential problems; discipline; role-play; mixed level teaching.
- Project work: types of project; organising and implementing projects
- CALL: the use of CALL; evaluation of materials available; techniques for exploiting CD-Roms and the Internet.

Certificates
All course participants will receive a report and a diploma at the end of their course. The report clearly states attendance and the diploma can state total hours studied on the course, if necessary.
