Customer Feedback
Although CELTA was very intensive, the amount you learn is such a short amount of time is very satisfying. My confidence grew immensely and I learnt many transferrable skills.
Victoria Collins
The school was great, it was small and had a really lovely atmosphere. The course was great, it covered so much stuff and the teaching practice gave me loads of confidence.
The trainers were brilliant, they were friendly, helpful and approachable, if I had a problem I felt I could talk to them.
The teaching practice was so useful. It gave us experience and confidence in front of a class on a daily basis.

Course Description
The CELTA course is intensive and should only be attempted by candidates who are able to give it their undivided attention. There is a vast amount of work to be completed in a relatively short time. All applicants should be educated to the point of entry into Higher Education but a first degree is advisable for those intending to teach in the UK. It is also helpful to have personal language learning experience and essential to enjoy contact with people of other nationalities. Applicants should have a high level of fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English. Non-native-speakers are very welcome but an additional written task may be required to establish their level of proficiency.
CELTA , the Certificate of English Language teaching to Adults, is awarded by Cambridge ESOL. It is recognised worldwide and is an initial qualification for people with little or no teaching experience though it is also open to more experienced teachers who require some formal qualification.
Prospective candidates are required to complete an application form and a pre-interview task and attend an interview. A further pre-course task is also required of successful applicants.
The course focuses on five main units of learning.
- learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context.
- language analysis and awareness
- language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening
- planning and resources for different contexts
- developing teaching skills and professionalism
Assessment is continuous. There are two components of assessment:
- Teaching practice: trainees are required to teach at two levels for an total of six hours. Assessment is on their overall performance.
- Written assignments: trainees complete four assignments focusing on classroom teaching; language systems of English; adult learners; language skills.
Trainees must pass both components to be awarded the certificate.
Pass grades are awarded to candidates whose performance meets the criteria in all areas while Pass grades A and B indicate that trainees have demonstrated levels of ability and achievement significantly higher than the pass-mark criteria. Although it is possible to fail the course, Studio Cambridge boasts a low failure rate thanks to its stringent selection policy.

Help for Jobs
In the final week of the course, candidates have sessions on Cultural Awareness, Professional Development and on Teaching at Home and Abroad. In addition to a job board where recent posts are advertised, extensive advice is given as to where the newly qualified teachers can find job-related information. This includes publications, web sites, organisations etc. Recommended booklists are available and occasionally some of the larger EFL organisations visit Studio to recruit new teachers.
Studio is proud of its CELTA graduates and has a long history of offering
many of them work, particularly in the busy summer period. This has been a most rewarding experience and to the mutual satisfaction of everyone concerned.
