Course Description

The Cambridge CELTA course in one of the leading industry-standard and internationally-recognised TEFL qualifications. The course is accredited by the Cambridge University Examining Board who will also issue your certificate. The CELTA qualification is also recognised by the British Council and is classified as a level 4 qualification (a degree level qualification) by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in the UK.

The course consists of four main elements - input, teaching practice, observation and written assignments.

Input Sessions
These will usually take place in the afternoons where you will learn the methodologies and skills involved in TEFL teaching.

Teaching Practice
TP sessions will take place in the mornings and you will complete at least 6 hours of assessed teaching practice during the 4 weeks. When you are not teaching you will observe your fellow trainees in action. The teaching practice sessions will either consist of a skills-based or a language-focused lesson. You will have to demonstrate sufficient competence in both in order to pass the course. At the end of each session there will be a reflective feedback session on the day's teaching.

Observation
This is an essential part of the course. Not only will you observe your peers teaching, you will also observe and analyse the teaching of professional teachers. This is an invaluable way to learn new techniques and ideas which you can then apply to your own teaching.

Written Assignments
You will have to complete four written tasks over the 4 weeks. The tasks will focus on adult learning, the English language system, language skills and classroom teaching.

CELTA Course Timetable (day 2 onwards)
09:15 to 11:30 - Teaching practice sessions (with 15 minute break)

Assessment
Assessment is continuous and there is no 'sit-down' exam at the end of the course. In addition to the feedback after every teaching practice session, each trainee has a tutorial with the tutors at the end of week two and there are min-tutorials regarding the written assignments throughout the course. Tutors agree on the final grade (Pass A, Pass B or Pass) of each trainee and an external assessor also sees each one's work.

Who can apply for the course?
No previous teaching experience is required, but all applicants must be at least 20 years of age. Younger candidates will be considered at the school's discretion. You will also need to demonstrate a good level of language awareness in order to be accepted onto the course.
