Course Description
As an initial qualification for English language teaching, the ELC CertTESOL (Teaching English As A Second Language) leads to job opportunities both at home and abroad. It is designed to give candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience the knowledge and skills needed to teach English around the world. It is also suitable for candidates with some experience who are already in the profession, but who have no formal or practical teaching qualification.
There is also a full timetable of formal input sessions, where you will be introduced to the nuts and bolts of language teaching, covering the principles of effective teaching and also a range of practical skills enabling you to teach English to adult learners. Each trainee can expect a minimum of 10 teaching hours observed and unobserved during the course, in addition to observing experienced English teachers in the classroom and completing a range of practically focused written assignments, which help you to analyse and refine your teaching skills. By the end of the course, you will have a thorough grasp of the essentials of teaching English, along with a broad range of effective teaching techniques and classroom management skills.
In addition to preparing candidates for teaching adult learners, this course also covers topics such as business English and YL preparation. Most months, candidates are even taken to Italian schools to teach the children there!
As well as being a rewarding experience in and of itself, English language teaching also gives you the opportunity to live in a different culture long enough to really get to know it.
Accommodation Options
1. Trainee Flats
The school reserves flats specifically for the use of trainees following the CertTESOL programme. These are all easily accessible via public transport and travelling time to and from the school is no more than thirty minutes.
Flats are fully functional and well equipped. You will have your own room (unless you request to share) and usually 1-3 other trainees as flatmates. There is a kitchen with cooking facilities, bathroom and WC, and bedrooms furnished with wardrobes, chairs and study desks. There are also other essential items, such as irons and ironing boards and in most cases a washing machine. Blankets and sheets are provided, but bath towels are not. School flats are all non-smoking unless trainees agree otherwise among themselves.
Availability
The accommodation is available from the Sunday before the first day of the course to the Saturday after the last day of the course. The school can often allow trainees to move into the accommodation a few days early, or stay a few days after, at no extra charge but we cannot guarantee it. If you would like to know if you can arrive early or leave late please ask before you make any travel plans and we will confirm availability in writing. If you choose to arrive before the available dates you will have to make hostel or hotel reservations for your first night(s) in Florence.
The price for trainee accommodation is 390 to 550 Euro for the course.
Please note that accommodation will be arranged through the school and would be paid for upon your arrival in Florence.

Florence
Coming to Florence is like discovering treasure after a very pleasurable hunt through rolling Tuscan countryside, olive groves and vineyards. An Aladdin's cave of basilicas, frescoes and piazzas, it does not fail to seduce a steady stream of admirers, year after year. Art, music, poetry and all that the Italian Renaissance stood for back in the 15th century is no less impressive in Firenze today.
The school is also able to offer trainees Italian lessons, cultural events programmes and internships for up to 3 months.
Help for Jobs
Job assistance and advice is provided, and we do not place graduates in paid positions. Teaching internships are available; enquire with the school direct.
