Course Description
This centre is one of the fastest growing - and best located - schools anywhere in Australia.It is just a 5-minute walk from the Opera House and Harbour Bridge and 2 minutes from transport, cafes and shopping centres.
Course Content
- A minimum of 120 contact hours between participants and course tutors including input, tutorial support, planning and feedback on teaching practice
- A minimum of 6 hours teaching practice supervised by a course tutor
- A minimum of 6 hours directed observation of lessons taught by experienced teachers
The course is highly practical in approach and is designed to enable participants to:
- Develop an awareness of language and a knowledge of the description of English
- Develop an understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner
- Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English
- Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom
- Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing and for reference. Identify opportunities for their own future development as professionals in the field.
Entry Requirements
No previous teaching experience or training is required, but candidates must:
- Have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course and achieve all assessment criteria.
- Hold a degree or tertiary entry level qualifications.
- Be at least 18 years old at the start of the course

- Language as communication - how language functions in context.
- Language analysis - the tense system, form and function, discourse.
- Phonology - stress, intonation and sounds, the phonemic alphabet.

- Learners' needs - differences in motivation and learning styles of adults.

Lesson planning
- Planning lessons - staging different types of lessons and planning a series of lessons.
- Designing tasks, activities and Materials for the classroom.
Classroom management & teaching skills
Practical skills for teaching language structures, vocabulary and pronunciation at different levels:
- Practical skills for developing the skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening.
- Techniques for correcting learners' errors.
- Managing classroom activities.
- Testing - designing and using tests in the classroom.
Resources and materials
- Familiarisation with a range of current coursebooks and teaching materials.
- Designing your own language teaching materials.
- Using classroom aids - exploiting the whiteboard, cassette recorders, visual aids etc.
Professional development
- Finding a teaching position and future career development.
Assessment
Course assessment, which is continuous and integrated, is based on classroom teaching practice and on written assignments. The certificate is awarded to candidates who satisfy all assessment criteria and complete all course requirements. Final grades are validated by an external assessor appointed by the University of Cambridge, who visits each course to observe practice teaching and inspect candidates' portfolios of written work in order to standardise grading and monitor the courses.
Please note that the full-time course is very intensive and requires total commitment. There are three hours of lectures or workshops each day, as well as two hours of teaching practice with foreign learners, followed by discussion and evaluation. You should allow between two to four hours each evening for lesson preparation and writing assignments. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to fulfil the course requirements if you have any other obligations over this period such as a part- time job or a commitment to another course. You should also be in good health and be able to manage the stress arising from an intensive course of this nature.
Accommodation Options
The most popular accommodation choice is the homestay, living with a local family. This accommodation type includes half board - 2 meals/day (breakfast and dinner) 7 days a week and 3 meals/day on weekends (+ lunch). Cost for homestay accommodation is AUD 270 per week, (minimum booking is 2 weeks) and AUD 250 in Brisbane. Home stay families provide a single furnished room in a family home and include breakfast and dinner every day and lunches on weekends.
In addition to that there is a one off AUD 240 placement fee
Hostel fees would be a AUD 310 plus for basic hostel room.
Airport transfer fees are AUD 131 one way.
