Customer Feedback

A great place to study, cheap accommodation and food mean you can go out and eat each night. The visiting CELTA tutor was excellent. The course was very hard work but a worthwhile experience that has helped me develop as a taecher. I feel like i've learned so much! My favourite part of the course was the interaction with the students and fellow trainees.
-Iona Brennan-

I was glad to come to a new destination to do this course. The trainers were excellent, friendly and helpful and always available for questions and advice. The school and facilities were both of a good standard.
-Marian Ryan-

The trainers were knowledgable and experienced and kept us engaged.I have to count the four weeks as a significant period of personal growth. Hanoi is a charming city. I'm falling in love with it. The food is great, the ambience is seductive, and the people are warm and friendly. I highly recommend it as a destination for training and/or teaching.

Course Description

The Certificate in English Teaching to Adults is an introductory course for candidates with little or no previous experience in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Accredited by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, it is the most internationally recognised and respected English Language Teaching qualification.

All Celta courses are moderated and assessed by UCLES (the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate), guaranteeing worldwide quality and consistency of Celta training.

Course Content
The course presents a view of the principles underlying language teaching, and deals extensively with the analysis of English from the learners' perspective. Presentation of new language, activities to develop language skills, planning and effective utilisation of resources, syllabus design, and timetabling are all covered.

Assessment
Assessment of the course is continuous and integrated. Candidates are assessed on two components: Lesson planning and teaching (through supervised Teaching Practice), and Classroom-related written assignments (of which there are four in total).
The course is divided into two closely related parts. Input sessions covering language teaching methodology and language analysis are followed by daily Teaching Practice sessions, with feedback from the course tutors and other trainees.

The course syllabus is designed to enable candidates to:
Develop an awareness of language, a knowledge of the systems of English, and apply these in their professional practice.
Develop an understanding of the contexts in which adults learn English, their motivation for doing so, and the respective roles of the teacher and the learner.
Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English.
Develop a range of skills for teaching adults in the classroom.
Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners for teaching, testing, and for reference.
Identify opportunities for their own future development as professionals in the field.

Timetable
Courses are generally scheduled Monday-Friday, 9:30-5:30, over four weeks. The total course length is 120 contact hours.

Morning sessions are dedicated to Input sessions, covering topics related to teaching methodology and language analysis, and afternoon sessions are dedicated to supervised Teaching Practice, peer and tutor feedback, and supervised lesson planning.

In addition to this, candidates will be required to attend 6 hours of observations of experienced teachers, usually scheduled in the evenings.

The Celta course in very intensive in nature, and candidates will need to dedicate a minimum of 80 hours across the course, in the evenings and at weekends, to the required reading, research, pre- and post-session tasks, assignments, and lesson preparation.

Accommodation Options

There are a variety of guest houses in the city centre, within easy walking distance of the school. Most are located in the Old Quarter, the heart of Ha Noi, a bustling network of 36 streets, each given over to one of the ancient guilds. Accommodation ranges from 3.5 - 8.5 GBP/night depending upon quality. Most guest houses will be happy to negotiate a discount for a longer-term stay.

An alternative for those who wish to stay longer than the course is to rent a private apartment. These range from 85 - 140 GBP/month, but are very difficult to secure for less than a 3-month term.

Clients have to arrange accommodation themselves.

Many of our Celta trainees are so attracted to the city and its lifestyle that they decide to settle here permanently after their training.

Hanoi's attractions are many: a small, busy, exotic city still largely untouched by the modernization that has destroyed other regional cities; an incredible range of affordable local and foreign food; easy-to-find accommodation for all budgets; great shopping; and, the warmest of people. For a Celta location, it doesn't get any better.
