Customer Feedback

This centre is well organised and the trainers for the course were excellent. It was much smaller than I expected and this meant that the class sizes were very small which was excellent for the CELTA training.
The Spanish course was really good, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the teacher was excellent. The CELTA course was also very good, it's extremely intensive and I think that balance of the 2 week Spanish/ 4 week CELTA/ 1 week chillout was great.
I loved Palma, it's a beautiful city and a really wonderful place to live, the people are friendly and there is a lot to see and do on the island.
The whole of the CELTA course was really interesting, always stimulating even though I always felt under pressure! It developed great comradery amongst the trainees and this was one of the best things about the course.

Course Description

Course Details

2 weeks Spanish + 4 weeks CELTA + 1 week chill out + your accommodation
= 7-week bargain price package!

How will this package benefit me?

You will meet the foreign students in the classes you observe and see experienced teachers in action. This will help to make your teaching practice during CELTA less intimidating and you will probably find it easier to anticipate and deal with students' language problems during teaching practice.

The Spanish course is 20 hours per week, at any level, in international groups with other language learners. You will benefit from seeing your Spanish teachers in action whilst improving your own Spanish language skills.

Please note that the Spanish course is not suitable for absolute beginners . At least a very basic knowledge of Spanish is required in order to book the course .

The last week of this package is a much needed one-week chill out period. This time can be used to prepare your CV and start job hunting (using the Spanish that you have learnt on the course). If you have already found a job or don't want to start looking yet you can have a well earned holiday in Palma de Mallorca.

The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching Award (CELTA) is probably the most widely recognised qualification within the EFL profession. The course is suitable for both those new to the profession and those with experience but no formal training.

Applicants will usually have a university degree but other candidates who can prove their suitability for the course will be considered. Non-native speakers of English can be considered for this course but they must demonstrate that their level of English, both spoken and written, is satisfactory.

Cambridge Proficiency would be a minimum requirement.

The course is an introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and aims to lay a firm foundation on which a teacher can build as s/he gains experience. It can also act as a refresher course for those with some TEFL experience but with no formal training.

During the course, the following aspects are covered:

- Introduction to the underlying principles of teaching language.

- Ways of presenting new language items.

- Techniques for further practice with emphasis on speaking.

- Use of visual aids, drama techniques and video.

- Developing listening skills, including use of taped material.

- Developing reading skills, including use of authentic material and readers.

- Developing writing skills.

- Working from coursebooks
.
- Alternative approaches to language teaching.

- Analysis of language from a foreign learner's point of view.

- Correction techniques.

- Teaching pronunciation.

The course timetable is divided into two closely related parts. Methodology and language analysis input sessions are followed by daily teaching practice where groups of up to five trainees work with small classes of students and gain experience of teaching at different levels.

After each teaching practice session there is a feedback in the group about the day's lesson. The observation of practising teachers is an intrinsic part of the course and requires trainees to be in the centre during the evening outside course hours. In addition to this a free four hour session on teaching younger learners will be scheduled on one of the middle Saturdays of the course. This session will be given by Jan Wright, who is a CELTA tutor and published author of childrens' text books.

Getting accepted for a course

Acceptance on the course is not automatic. All candidates must fill out the application form and pre-interview task and email or fax them back to us. Interviews can be conducted by telephone or possibly in a centre in the UK. The school will contact you to make arrangements following receipt of your forms.

Special features of this programme

At the end of the course, candidates will receive a detailed seminar on finding work in Mallorca or in mainland Spain. The centre has excellent contacts with 7 language schools on the island and a very good record of finding employment for our CELTA graduates.

Accommodation Options

2012
The price of the Spanish+CELTA+Chill package includes 7 weeks' accommodation in a self-catering apartment shared with other students (either fellow CELTA students or learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language).

School Details - Palma de Mallorca

The school is located in the centre of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Spanish Balearic islands.

The school has also been running Cambridge CELTA teacher training courses since 1988. Cambridge CELTA graduates can be found at various levels of the EFL industry on the island.

Most people know that Mallorca is the most popular tourist destination in Europe. It is also arguably the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean, largely because of its stunning variety of scenery, the warm hospitality of the islanders and the richness of its food and drink. There are two main resorts for people who are looking for only sun, sand and nightclubs, and then there is the rest of the island - carefully protected against over-development by the proud Mallorcans. The city of Palma is a fitting capital, not only of Mallorca, but also of the Balearic islands.

Timetable

On a typical day classes take place from 9:00 - 17:15. The mornings are reserved for teaching practice and Input will take place in the afternoons (14:00 - 17:15)

Help for Jobs

The CELTA course is just the first, vital step towards a career in ELT. During the course, there will be a session on Professional Development, providing a comprehensive guide to the options available post-CELTA.

Not only are we able to give you guidance on finding teaching postitions in Spain, but we are also able to point you in the right direction if you plan to work in other parts of the world. The school is a member of the International House World Organisation and the International House Eastern Spain Group, and is able to provide information regarding posts available through these organisations' recruitment networks.
