Customer Feedback

The course was intense, as expected, but we learnt so much. I really loved it.

The trainers were amazing - always approachable and supportive. They are very knowledgeable and taught us so much.

Course Description

Course Mode

The part-time course usually takes place three mornings a week for ten weeks. Classes take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 -14:00. This allows participants to work and follow the course at the same time.

The aim of the Cambridge CELTA is to provide an initial training scheme for those new to the profession and also for those teachers with experience but little formal training. The course programme is designed to enable candidates to:

- Develop an awareness of language and a knowledge of the description of English and apply these in professional practice.

- Develop an initial understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner.

- Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English.

- Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom.

- Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing and referencing.

- Identify opportunities for their own future development in the field.

This is a very practical course which combines both input and teaching practice.

Entry Requirements

To have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables candidates to follow the course. To be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course and to have a good standard of education.

Application procedure

Applicants should fill in an application form & complete the pre-interview tasks. This is then followed by an informal interview either face-to-face or over the phone.

Course Description

A comprehensive booklet of tasks and reading is issued as essential preparation for the course. Participants are required to buy 'Practical English Usage' by M. Swan (Oxford) and 'The Practice of English Language Teaching' by J. Harmer (Longman) to accompany the booklet.

The seminar sessions and workshops look at language systems (grammatical, phonological, lexical and discourse systems), classroom management, ways of introducing language, the development of the four major skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), the role of feedback, the planning stages, the use of audiovisual aids, factors that affect learning, roles of the teacher, materials evaluation, the teaching of different levels, testing and the use of drama. Although not strictly part of the syllabus we do offer sessions on teaching the younger learner and teaching business classes.

The teaching practice runs hand in hand with the seminar sessions. Over the course each participant teaches for varying lengths of time, from 20 to 75 minutes, for a minimum total of six hours to groups of Spanish learners at two or three different levels. Feedback is usually delayed to the following morning (i.e. there is time given to reflect and evaluate the lesson before discussing it). Feedback is both oral and written.

Outside of the course hours participants are required to complete several written assignments, prepare their teaching practice lessons and observe experienced teachers at the school.

Assessment
The course is continually assessed on three main areas; progress in teaching practice, the written assignments and professional development. Upon successful completion the internationally recognised Cambridge Certificate is awarded together with a progress report from the course tutors. The pass rate at the school is very high.

Accommodation Options

The school can arrange for participants to stay in a room in a shared flat for the duration of the course. The rent for this is 380 Euros per month. There is also a 30 Euros accommodation fee. Payment for accommodation is expected at the same time as the course fees.

School Details - Madrid Plaza Castilla

The school is a lively and friendly language school situated in Plaza Castilla, in the north of Madrid. It opened its doors in 1984, and quickly became an established English language learning centre. The school has grown to include the following departments:

- General English classes in the school: seventeen classrooms in the centre, open from 08.00-22.00, catering to both adults and the younger learner.

- Corporate English classes off site: the vast majority of our language teaching is to professionals in their own environment. We work with all sizes of businesses, from multinationals to the smaller business.

- Teacher Education Department: one of the largest teacher training organisations on mainland Europe, offering Cambridge ESOL courses, CELTA, CELTYL & DELTA, all year round.

- Spanish language department: both part-time and intensive courses all year round.

There are also small French and German language departments. All teachers and trainers are qualified and experienced in their respective fields and there is a team of administrative staff, ready to help out with any query.

The centre has successfully trained over 2000 teachers on Certificate and Diploma courses over the past fourteen years. It is one of the larger ELT training centres outside of the UK and has built up an international reputation for professionalism. Typical feedback from trainees centres on the different challenges that are offered but also emphasises the enjoyable nature of the courses.

Madrid
Take a pin and stick it in the centre of Spain, and you've pretty much got Madrid. Now stick that same pin in the centre of Madrid and you should have the Puerta del Sol, the point from which distances to all corners of the country are measured, and a reminder of the city's importance both past and present. Madrid stands up for all that is Spain, be it culture, art, museums or shopping, but more than this it exudes an energy and flair quite unlike any other capital. The red brick of the Plaza Mayor, the clowns in El Retiro park, traffic at 4am, the flea market, cracked nutshells on the floor, turrn and GoyaMadrid is many things to many people, but maybe it's this very hotchpotch that puts such rhythm in Spain's heart.

Help for Jobs

The school takes a hands-on approach to life after the CELTA course. On the course there is a session on how to go about looking for work in Madrid in particular, but also work in Spain & the world at large. We also discuss pros & cons of different types of English language teaching work, what to be careful about & what to find out.

Being a very well established training centre in Madrid means that language schools contact us in their search for teachers & we pass on requests & adverts to our trainees. We also regularly take on teachers from our CELTA courses ourselves throughout the academic year.

The teaching market in Madrid is very healthy for the newcomer & on successful completion of the BLC CELTA course, there is little difficulty in finding employment.
