Course Description
A message from Dr Val Hennessy, director of the school:
The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert TESOL) is your essential first qualification as an English teacher. It shows you are a professional, and it’s a guarantee to employers that you are a motivated, capable teacher.
We have an unbeatable success rate on this popular programme: over the past several years, an amazing 100% of participants completing the course have passed and obtained this valuable professional qualification.
One reason for this success is that you get lots more than the bare minimum on our programme. For a start, you’ll get the benefit of 5 weeks of training, not 4, so you can cover more topics in greater detail and develop more skills. This will make you more confident, more creative, and more flexible in your classes. You’ll also have access to our great resources, which are among the best and most extensive in the country. What’s more, you’ll also have sessions with between four and six different experienced trainers, which ensures you can learn a variety of different styles of teaching. And that’s not all: you’ll also get our great collection of over 140 tried and tested classroom activities - an instant repertoire for success!
Throughout the course, our focus is on practical ideas and essential classroom techniques. You’ll cover all the fundamental principles of teaching English as a foreign language. On our course, you get to work with a range of different nationalities, and different levels of ability. You’ll also teach various sorts of lessons - including grammar lessons - so you feel much more confident about teaching in different circumstances anywhere in the world.
Benefits of our course:
Look at all these benefits of training with us:
* 5 weeks, not 4, so you learn and practice more
* Lots of tutorial support and personal guidance
* Great resources and facilities to help you feel at home here
* Study Room with over 15,000 hours of materials
* Constant contact with our international students from around the world

Is our course right for you?
No experience is required - the course is open to everyone with a degree level education. If you want to do the course but don’t have a degree - contact us to discuss your case.
You need to be fully available for the programme so you can give it your full attention. Trying to do a part-time job at the same time is not a good idea. And get the support of your friends and family: you’re going to be busy!
Typical participants include college graduates, professional people looking for a career change, people planning to travel around the world. Gap-year students have also successfully completed the course.
We welcome international applicants whose first language is not English. Non-native speakers should have a level of proficiency in English equivalent to CPE or IELTS score 7.0, TOEFL 600.
Course aims:
This Certificate in TESOL course will give you the skills and the essential knowledge you need to find a good job as a teacher anywhere in the world.
In particular, the course will:
* Introduce you to the main features of grammar and phonology
* Help you assess the learning needs of your students
* Train you to design and evaluate great materials
* Show you how to plan effective lessons
* Make you familiar with the leading published EFL titles
* Give you practice using the main classroom aids such as whiteboards, OHPs, visual aids and dictionaries
* Develop your confidence in your ability to teach
* Allow you to observe experienced teachers using a variety of modern methods and materials
Key components of our course:
Grammar and language analysis. Our regular training sessions show you how it works, how to explain it, and you’ll try different practical activities that will help you see how to teach it clearly to your students. We also have hundreds of books for you to use for guidance when it comes to teaching grammar. That’s reassuring!
Phonology is also new to many participants. But don’t worry - we use clear, practical methods and hands-on exercises to help you discover this important skill. In fact, you’ll be able to transcribe using phonemic script in no time! Learning about phonology is essential to help your students sound more natural and more fluent when they speak.
Teaching practice is of course an important part. You’ll teach for 6 hours in the course of the programme. All your teaching is observed by our trainers, and you’ll get detailed feedback about every aspect of your teaching and helpful guidance. This will build up into a very useful Journal that documents your progress as a teacher.
Learning a new language from scratch. This will help you appreciate the frustrations of being an adult beginner. It will also show you essential classroom techniques to use when teaching beginners. We normally use an Oriental language - and we guarantee that you will be speaking and understanding the language from the very first lesson! It’s a fun component of the programme.
For your Learner Profile, you have the opportunity to work closely with one particular student and learn all about his or her learning background, needs and interests, strengths and weaknesses. You will prepare and teach a one-to-one lesson - a very useful skill for today’s market.
There’s also a Materials project - we will help you develop an extensive bank of your own materials from a variety of sources, so you create and assess classroom materials of all sorts.
Your professional development is important to us- here we help you think and behave as a professional teacher, working as a member of a team in a communicative profession. You will learn to take more responsibility for your work in and outside the classroom. We’ll also help you present your CV and prepare for job interviews so you have all the advantages when you come to look for your first teaching position.
A typical day: You have morning lessons from 9:00 - 10:30 and 11:00 - 12:30 on practical aspects of teaching or language awareness. You have a chance to get to know our foreign students better in the coffee break and over lunch. In the afternoons we have training sessions and guidance about lesson planning and effective teaching from 2:25 - 4:00. Then you have time to plan and prepare your lessons and get useful guidance from a tutor until 6:00pm. Teaching practice takes place from 1:30 to 2:15 everyday except Friday. You’ll probably spend 2 - 3 hours in the evenings going over your notes, reading for the next day, or preparing lessons.

The course involves morning and afternoon sessions for 5 weeks. This includes classroom observations, seminars, mini-lectures, tutorials and teaching practice.

It goes without saying that we are very happy to provide you with support during the course to help you prepare for life post-Cert!
To focus on your future EFL career, there is a 'Careers and Advice' session where we look at cover letters, CVs, important things when applying for a job, what to be careful about before accepting, plus a chance to ask an experienced tutor any questions you have relating to careers and finding work. You will also be given a contact details sheet summarising some of the main EFL organisations and their contact details. These schools will have jobs advertising year-round, so they are useful for whichever course you choose to do.
Once the course has finished we are very happy to act as referees for you for future employers and we can give you advice by email should you have any questions relating to potential employment. It is worth noting that it is not uncommon (especially for courses leading up to the summer period) for trainees to get their first work experience with us at our summer schools.
