Course Description
The Certificate course
Cambridge CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) is an internationally recognised qualification for teaching English as a foreign language. It is a basic requirement for employers of quality English language teaching centres around the world.
The aim of the Cambridge CELTA is to provide a basis in English language teaching for those with no previous teaching experience. It is, however, also suitable for people already in the profession who want an internationally recognised formal teaching qualification and gain more insight into the practice of ELT.
What the course involves
The CELTA course is highly practical and is assessed through observed teaching practice and practical written assignments. After our course, successful candidates will have developed an awareness of:
-a range of techniques for presenting, practising and revising vocabulary and grammar, with an emphasis on speaking.
-how the four main skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing can be taught and learned.
-a wide range of creative tools to design useful and motivating lessons, using video, visual aids, drama, music etc.
-how to correct students sensitively and effectively.
-the characteristics of English vocabulary and pronunciation compared to other languages and a range of techniques to draw students' attention to these.
-how to manage a classroom situation, deal with pair and group work and encourage positive group dynamics.
-how to critique, select and adapt materials from a variety of published and authentic sources.
-the fundamentals of the English language through the eyes of a language learner
-the psychological processes involved in learning a foreign language and the effects on language acquisition of different types of motivation and learning style.
-An analysis of your own strengths and weaknesses and the importance of ongoing self reflection in your roles as teacher, colleague and employee.
Structure of the course
The normal timetable is from 9 a.m.-5.30 p.m. Monday - Friday. Teaching practice (TP) occupies 2 hours everyday from Monday to Thursday and the rest of the day is dedicated to feedback, input sessions and lesson preparation. Fridays consist of input sessions and these usually finish about 4 p.m.
In addition to these hours, candidates are expected to prepare lessons, complete written assignments and observe experienced teachers at the school.
Teaching practice is an important part of assessment. Trainees will teach for a total of 6 hours over the course, divided into lessons of 20 - 60 minutes in length. Students are largely Spanish and trainees will experience teaching students of two distinct levels of language ability. Each lesson receives detailed verbal and written feedback from tutors, outlining what worked well and things that could be improved. The lessons are also discussed orally with fellow trainees and the course tutors.
Input sessions are very practical and related directly to teaching practice. They cover the main issues of language analysis and teaching methodology and techniques. They are highly interactive and the focus is very much 'demonstrate' rather than 'explain'.
What kind of people do CELTA
Applicants are normally aged 21 and above, though candidates from 18 upwards are also welcome to apply. The course is designed for native speakers of English but non-native speakers of English with a high standard of written and spoken English, which enables them to follow all aspects of the course, are also welcome to apply for a place. Candidates usually have a university degree but those with university entrance level education will also be considered if they can show evidence of commitment, aptitude for teaching and hard work.
Number of participants on the course
There will be a maximum of twelve participants on the course. Selection onto the course is by interview. Personal interviews will take place in Madrid. Telephone interviews can be arranged for applicants based outside Spain.
The Venue
The school is opposite Metro Serrano (line 4), right in the centre of the city.

Madrid
Take a pin and stick it in the centre of Spain, and you've pretty much got Madrid. Now stick that same pin in the centre of Madrid and you should have the Puerta del Sol, the point from which distances to all corners of the country are measured, and a reminder of the city's importance both past and present. Madrid stands up for all that is Spain, be it culture, art, museums or shopping, but more than this it exudes an energy and flair quite unlike any other capital. The red brick of the Plaza Mayor, the clowns in El Retiro park, traffic at 4am, the flea market, cracked nutshells on the floor, turrón and Goya
Madrid is many things to many people, but maybe it's this very hotchpotch that puts such rhythm in Spain's heart.
