Course Description
The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
This four week intensive initial teacher training course leads to the award of the internationally recognised certificate. The Cambridge certificate is an essential first step in a career in TESOL. The qualification is an essential minimum requirement for teachers in a British Council accredited school. Successful participants will be able to use this qualification to teach in schools in the UK and overseas. Over 10,000 candidates complete a CELTA course each year.
The Cambridge examining body has strict guidelines for teaching the CELTA qualification, so course content and teaching will be quite standard across most schools. However, the school in Manchester tries to offer their students the best service possible within these guidelines such as:
- Constant support throughout the course, for example:
-> about 30 minutes timetabled teaching practice preparation every day - tutors are
available during this time to help with students' queries about preparing their
teaching practice sessions
-> regular tutorials throughout the course to track students' progress and to help
with any problems they have
-> lots of practical help, for example finding material, writing the lessons etc.
- High pass rate: on average over 90% of the students who complete the course

Course Aim
To empower the trainees to develop a greater understanding of the learning and teaching process. The Academy encourages participants to adopt a reflective, questioning and critical approach, central to which is the participant's own experience, attitudes and beliefs. Trainers will be guides, facilitators and resources rather than fonts of all knowledge. Courses are hands-on, innovative, challenging, and enjoyable.
Who takes the course?
The course is designed for people from a wide variety of backgrounds, who may or may not have any teaching experience. All participants must have a very good command of English in order to be able to cope with the demands of the course. They must be able to express themselves clearly and accurately both orally and in writing. Participants should have a high level of motivation and commitment and be able to work as open and reflective members of a team.
Course Contents
Over the four week period the course will: -
-Integrate theory and practice.
-Provide a minimum of 100 contact hours between tutors and trainees involving input, tutorial support, supervised lesson planning, feedback, and peer observation.
-Include, in addition, six hours of assessed teaching practice per trainee.
-Include, in addition, six hours classroom observation of experienced ELT professionals.
-Require the submission by each candidate of a portfolio of work including materials related to teaching practice and written assignments.
How am I assessed?
Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the course and there is no final examination. Each course is moderated by an external assessor, who is appointed by Cambridge ESOL. Assessment consists of 3 components. They are: Assessment of Teaching Practice, Written Assignments and Professional Development. Candidates are assessed on their overall ability over 6 hours of teaching practice, working at two levels of ability. There are four written assignments. Two assignments explore aspects of teaching and learning English at adult level, one involves work on the language system of English and one is a reflection on classroom teaching. Professional Development is assessed by the candidate’s overall performance on the course. In order to gain the qualification, candidates must pass all three components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass ‘B’ and Pass ‘A’.
Accommodation Options
The school can arrange various accommodation options for you through the school.
They can offer the school's own student house, located just a twenty-five minute bus journey away. The house is self-catering, students will share the kitchen, lounge and dining room with other residents. The prices depend on the room and the facilities, they can be between GBP 85 - GBP 155 per week, plus registration fee of GBP 40.
Also, student residences are available during July and August. Students can book rooms with self-catering facilities, cost is approx GBP 18 per night, plus registration fee of GBP 40.

Help for Jobs
The CELTA course includes a session on Future opportunities: A career in EFL. The session takes place at the end of the course and aims to provide guidance on how to look for a job. Interview format as well as possible questions are also discussed in order to further clarify the process of job seeking.
In addition, trainees are given details of vacancies that may be going at the time and directed to take a closer look at the jobs board in the training room. The school has regular contact with various recruitment agencies and schools worldwide and whenever details of jobs are passed on to us they are posted on the jobs board.
We are not a recruitment agency and therefore we cannot guarantee that we will find a job for trainees on successful completion of the course. However, we do give help and offer practical advice in the later stages of each course.
