Course Description

The Cambridge CELTA
The Cambridge CELTA course (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is the best known and most widely taken initial teaching qualification of its kind in the world:

- If you want to teach English to foreigners this is the qualification for you
- The certificate is a TEFL certificate awarded by Cambridge University- with an international reputation for excellence
- CELTA is a passport to teaching overseas and an ideal way to travel the world whilst developing new skills
- People of all different ages and backgrounds study CELTA: university graduates, under-grads preparing for their gap year, those looking for a career change, ex-teachers of other subjects & so on
- Some people use CELTA to teach English for just a year or two, while others carry on to teach for many years

CELTA Entry Requirements:
All applications must meet Cambridge requirements, but basically, applicants must:
- be at least 18.
- have a competence in English, both written and spoken, that would enable them to teach a range of levels
- have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers

We only accept candidates if we feel confident that they will be likely to complete the course successfully.

CELTA Selection Procedure
Once we have your application from Cactus (see How to Apply below), we will arrange an interview, either in person in Barcelona, or by telephone.
Acceptance on the course is not automatic as we want to ensure candidates' suitability and high probability of success on the course.

What will I do during the course?
Please look at the Cambridge website (www.CambridgeESOL.org) for comprehensive course information and a syllabus.

The course time is divided between:
- input sessions,
- 6 hours of teaching practice,
- feedback on teaching,
- supervised lesson preparation,
- observation of experienced teachers

There are 120+ contact hours during the month.

On top of this you will do another 80+ hours for lesson preparation, written assignments & so on.

The practical nature of the course & the emphasis placed on teaching practice is reflected from day one. You work closely with a tutor & teach a class of adult learners. During the course you work with two different levels of students (& 2 tutors). The students are mainly Spanish but can be of any nationality.

What's the teaching practice and feedback like?
The aim is to make you a confident English teacher. The tutors give you lots of help at the start of the course, & while continuing to support you during the month, you become more and more autonomous. They help you develop the skills to become independent in your classroom preparation & confident in the actual classroom. This reflects the real world of language teaching.

The feedback sessions are designed to help you build on your successes & learn from your classroom experiences.

The aim is not to prescribe one way to teach a class, but to guide you & give you exposure and practice in different ways. At the same time, you will be informed about what is at the cutting edge of teaching practice these days. With experience & further professional development, you can make informed choices about what to do in the classroom.

What are the written assignments?
During the course you complete 4 assignments (of between 900 - 1,000 words each). As with everything on the course, they are of a practical nature, related to what goes on in the classroom. One assignment, for example, asks you to analyse the grammar you will be covering in a subsequent lesson (which is of course extremely helpful).
All of these assignments tie in closely with the input sessions & reflect the developmental nature of the course. You have access to the school library & your tutor is always available to help you.

Assessment
There is no exam as such on the CELTA.
Instead, you are assessed on 2 elements throughout the course:
1. the teaching practice
2. the written assignments
Obviously the teaching is the most important element.
After each lesson you will be given specific oral & written feedback so you will know how you are progressing. Obviously, anyone experiencing difficulties is given more help by the tutors.
Dedication, plenty of hard work, receptiveness to feedback & a sense of humour are what it takes to be successful on the CELTA.

Accommodation Options

The school will be happy to arrange accommodation for you during your CELTA course.

For most trainees this is usually a rented room in a self-catering apartment/lodgings.
You will have your own room and access to the facilities i.e. bathroom, kitchen etc. We try to find accommodation as near to the school as possible and catering for preferences, but no guarantees can be given as it depends on availability at the time of the course. Most apartments have WiFi Internet access.

You will be sharing with students of other nationalities, other CELTA trainees and/or with the owner. Food is not included in the price as apartments are self-catering.

The price of self-catering apartments/lodgings is:

14.35 EUR per night (Approx 502 EUR for five weeks)
There is a 45 Euro accommodation placement fee payable directly to the Barcelona School on the first day of the CELTA course.

School Details - Barcelona Augusta

Founded in 1985 this school is a Cambridge ESOL Exam Centre and CELTA Teacher Training centre fully dedicated to the organisation, administration and promotion of Cambridge ESOL Teaching Awards and Examinations in Barcelona and the surrounding area. The school also organises educational seminars for teachers, informative sessions, award ceremonies and support for both teachers and students.

It's not a language school although, due to their exam work, they have close links to the Barcelona school and language academy sectors. In fact many of their CELTA trainees find teaching work at one of their many exam supplier schools who come to them when they need to recruit new teachers.

The school located in an attractive, safe district of the Barcelona, near Barcelona University and the Barcelona FC Stadium. The historic city centre is a 15 minute metro ride away.

The fully qualified, experienced trainers are ready to help in any way they can in this small, friendly centre. There is free WiFi Internet access.

Barcelona
Don't forget the course is in Barcelona. If you like art, history, music, architecture, dance, museums, & street theatre, then this is the place for you.
If you like hot Summers, good wines, sandy beaches & a cup of coffee or tapas on the terrace of a cafe then it's also the place for you.
It's also nice to do the CELTA away from the distractions of home. As you can see - Barcelona has plenty of its own!

Help for Jobs

The ease with which you find a job post-CELTA depends very much on where you plan to work. Barcelona has around 200 language schools, with Spain as a whole over 4,000.
Obviously, this makes job-hunting relatively straightforward. Everyone who takes the CELTA usually finds work within 2 weeks of finishing the course (if not before it has finished). Other countries might require more time.

The school helps with practical advice on:
- looking for work
- preparing for an interview
- preparing your C.V.
- what to expect from a school
etc.
