Customer Feedback

The school and the quality of trainers were excellent all round. The course was extremely demanding but very well taught and now over, a very rewarding experience indeed.
-Harry Bucknall-

The school was extremely professional and the facilities were excellent. The course is very intensive, really tough and demanding. Our trainers made sure that we were all up to date with the amount of work we had.I am extremely impressed with their professionalism!
-Rossella Romano-

The school is very well equipped and all trainees are encouraged to use all the facilities available. The library has a huge number of books covering all TEFL related subjects. All staff are friendly and accommodating. The tutors were great and very supportive - and absolutely brilliant teachers themselves. It was a very positive experience all round. I never thought it was possible to learn this much in such a short period of time.
-Klaudia Holland-

I thought that the school and the trainers were excellent and had lots to offer. The course was well planned and executed, it was helpful and informative. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to teach and the contact that you get with so many different people from lots of different cultures. I liked the fact that my trainers were very approachable and helpful.

Course Description

The DELTA course will not only help you become a better teacher but will also lay the foundations for future career paths which may lead to teacher training, school management, materials production and even publishing.

The DELTA course covers two essential elements:

- Research and written work
- Development of practical teaching skills

Research and written work The research and written work is assessed in 3 components:

1 A portfolio of assessed coursework
- There are a series of input sessions on a variety of topics directly related to the DELTA syllabus and are delivered through workshops, seminars and lectures. Specific areas of interest are decided upon between your tutors and yourself
- There are 7 assignments, 6 of which are internally assessed. The 7th is externally assessed
- 5 of the assignments include observation of your teaching. The first 4 formal observations are completed during the course and you will be observed by one of the team of tutors assigned to your course. The final observation is part of your externally-assessed assignment and is observed by a Cambridge approved DELTA assessor who is not currently employed by International House London

2 The extended assignment is a case study of a learner (4000-4500 words) and is externally assessed

3 The written examination is a three and a half hour examination held in June and December. You may take the exam either in London or at a British Council or approved centre.

Development of Practical Teaching Skills:
- Teaching begins on the second day of the course and continues for the full 8 weeks
- Teaching will be to learners at different levels, though not every day
- The specific focus of assessed lessons will be closely connected to the topics you decide to explore in your research and writing.

DELTA course timetable There are five and a half hours of timetabled work every day
Three hours are dedicated to input and tutorial work
Two and a half hours are spent on teaching practice and feedback

DELTA course application procedure You must submit the following information and tasks:

1 Complete the application form and language awareness task (available for download at the bottom of the page)

2 Two lesson plans: please send two lesson plans, of one hour's duration each, for different levels. The lessons should have different aims (i.e. both should not be structure lessons). Bear in mind that the reader of these plans cannot infer what is not stated, so please write them as explicitly as possible. For example, if you intend to clarify the meaning of an area of grammar, lexis, or functional exponent, show precisely how you view the meaning and how you will deal with it. Give clear information at the beginning about the target group/level/context, and state your aims as precisely as possible. Give a thorough account of your procedures in the classroom management, patterns of interaction and approximate timings. Be sure to include a copy of any materials you are using.

3 Essay: a short essay, (maximum 1000 words), outlining your approach to ELT, with specific reference to your current teaching situation.

4 References: the names and addresses of two referees who should be familliar with teaching, and ideally, who have observed your lessons (e.g. your Director of Studies).

5 Teaching experience: please send a comprehensive but concise list of your teaching experience, starting with your most recent post, giving precise information i.e. name and address of school, dates, level/ages taught, types of class (e.g. General English, FCE etc.) and any post you have held.

6 Materials: please send a brief list of published materials you have used consistently or are very much familiar with (course books, supplementary books, and other materials).

The school's management reserves the right to postpone or cancel any course due to insufficient student numbers or operational problems.

We will acknowledge your application and arrange an interview once we have received your completed form and accompanying tasks. If you are resident outside the UK and unable to attend an interview we will make arrangements for a telephone interview.

Please note that the course price includes the Cambridge ESOL Examination fee of approximately £250.
