Course Description
The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) This is the most widely recognised initial qualification for English Language teachers and provides job opportunities both in the UK and abroad. The primary aim of the course is to provide initial training in TEFL. However, the courses are also very suitable for people who have previous teaching experience but do not have formal TEFL training or qualifications.
This course is designed to help candidates
- Develop an awareness of British or American English and the description of the language and apply these in their professional practice
- Develop an understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner
- Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English
- Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom
- Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing and for reference
- Identify opportunities for participants' own future development as professionals in the field
There is no final examination as candidates are continuously assessed in three areas: professional development, teaching practice and written assignments. The course is moderated by an external assessor, approved and appointed by Cambridge ESOL. The Cambridge ESOL entry fee is included in the course fees.
All applicants, whether native or non-native speakers of English, must have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to undertake the course.
Applicants must be at least 20 years old by the date of the end of the course.
They must have the potential to develop the necessay skills to become effective teachers and successfully complete the written assignments and practice teaching.
All applicants are interviewed individually or in pairs at the College. Where necessary telephone interviews can be arranged.
Typical day
Supervised teaching practice takes place in the afternoon, and is followed by feedback and the setting of teaching points. Trainees are divided into small teaching practice groups and each trainee teaches a minimum of 6 hours during the course : 2 weeks with one trainer and a class at one level and then 2 weeks with a different trainer and a class at a different level. By the end of the course, therefore, each trainee will have taught at least 2 levels and will have been observed by at least 2 teacher trainers.
Feedback gives an opportunity to discuss the afternoon's teaching with the other members of the teaching practice group and Course Tutor. In addition to oral feedback, the trainer provides written comments and observations.
Accommodation Options
The school can organise accommodation for trainees.
Homestay accommodation on a half-board basis costs £112 per week. From 28th June to 23th August half board homestay accommodation costs £117 per week. Superior half board costs £141. Breakfast only or self catering £87.
