Customer Feedback

The school has good facilities and the trainers and my fellow trainees were lovely people. The course was very intense! Lots of hard work, but worth it in the end.
-Selina Salvatori-

The CELTA was extremely intensive. All the seminars were very helpful and gave me the knowledge to develop my teaching skills. The teaching practice was hard but a great opportunity to test what I had learnt during the seminars and to improve my own teaching.
-Stefania Burelli-

The trainers were absolutely fantastic, so supportive and were just brilliant. The school had a really friendly atmosphere and all of the staff was incredibly helpful.
-Philippa Irwin-

Excellent school, friendly, helpful and very professional.

What to expect
To begin with, we'll start with how to break the ice with a new group of students and how to get them talking in English to you (and to each other!) and establish a working relationship.

Next, we'll look, from a practical perspective, at how people actually learn a language, so you'll take part in a short lesson in a foreign language so you know what it's like to be a learner, and use the experience to help you understand how teaching and learning happens in a modern classroom.

After that, we'll start work on understanding and recognising some of the basic technical terminology of English, so that you can start to understand the component parts of the language in a seminar on the building blocks of speech.

In the next session, we'll look at the practicalities of classroom and class management skills. How you set up a task and give instructions, how you organise your learners, and how you use resources like the board or audio-visual material. We'll show you some practical techniques you can use almost anywhere.

After lunch, we're going to look at one of the most basic parts of the English language, Tenses. Using lots of practical examples, we'll show you what they are, how they work, and how they're constructed. This will help you understand why most British people find foreign language books almost impossible to understand, and what you need to learn next to become a credible teacher.

This will give you confidence for the next session, which is how to teach grammar via a situation. You will be given a demonstration after which you will have the opportunity to practise with your peers which will help you apply what you've learned, and show you how to teach what you've learned in the previous seminar. By the time you're finished, you'll realise why the easiest way to learn something is to try and teach it, and you'll have a few basic techniques that you can use in grammar lessons in the classroom.

It's now the end of the first day. To give you some practise, we'll give you a choice of short and fun tasks to do, either by yourself or with some of your new colleagues, during the evening, so that you can start putting all you've learned so far into context.

To begin the second day, we'll discuss your previous day's progress, the lessons you've learned from doing a bit of teaching practise, and exchange hints, tips, and practical techniques with your peers.

To follow this, we'll involve you in some useful language practice activities, and after show you some clear and practical techniques on how to teach vocabulary and then give you the chance to practise on each other in a relaxed environment where you'll get help, advice, reassurance, and feedback from everyone.
We're then going to follow up with advice on how to teach and improve skills, focusing on teaching reading and listening in the classroom.

After lunch, we'll look at how to teach functions, which is the sort of practical language you might find in a phrasebook which helps you achieve your purpose. Nothing is guaranteed to get a class's attention more than this, so we'll take you through the dos and don'ts, and demonstrate how to teach functions through an amusing situation. We'll then give you the chance to teach one function to the rest of the group so you can get some practise with your peers in with a friendly and supportive audience.

We're almost at the end of the course, now, so we'll now show you how to bring everything together and create basic lesson plans, so that you have a clear idea what you're doing, why you're doing it, and what your learners will achieve by the end of the class.
Lastly, we'll then discuss the way forward. We'll look at training, employment opportunities in the UK and abroad, sources of information, qualifications, and answer any questions you have as best we can so that you can decide whether teaching is really for you or not.
