Course Description
The Cert. TESOL is an internationally recognized Level 4 qualification is for people who are new to teaching or for existing teachers of other subjects who would like to teach ESOL. It is a demanding course which gives a thorough introduction to English grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary as well as the theory of language learning. The main focus of the course is practical and you will learn to apply a wide range of teaching techniques in the daily teaching practice sessions.
Course Overview:
The course is divided into input sessions on Monday evenings and Saturdays and teaching practice on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (including feedback and preparation for the following teaching practice session). There are also five hours of tutorials timetabled (additional tutorials will be provided if you or your tutors have concerns about your performance on the course).
In the input sessions you will study language awareness, teaching skills and methodology and an unknown language.
Language awareness:
This includes the three language systems (vocabulary, grammar and phonology) and related areas such as spelling. This will be presented in a practical context so that you will also learn techniques for teaching each language point. These techniques are further developed in the teaching skills and methodology sessions. On the unknown language course you will have four hours of lessons in a foreign language, which will enable you to see some teaching techniques in action and to experience language learning from the students’ point of view.
Teaching practice (TP):
Early in the course each trainee teaches for 15 minutes each day, but as the course progresses you will teach longer lessons less frequently, for 30 minutes, then 45 minutes and a final 1-hour session. Your tutor will advise you on what to teach and how to teach it, but you are encouraged to think of your own ideas and to become more independent as the course progresses. Your timetable gives you a general teaching point for the day. Input sessions relating to specific timetabled teaching practice points are scheduled as far in advance as practicable.
Group feedback tutorials by your peers and tutor will be given after each teaching practice.
Assessment:
You will be assessed on your observed TP sessions on the day of observation. You will be expected to demonstrate progress based on your previous feedback. You will keep a TP Journal reflecting on your progress in each lesson and the feedback given.
In addition to this you will observe experienced teachers in regular classrooms and keep an Observation Journal of your observation forms and an Unknown Language Journal, reflecting on your experience as a learner and on the methods used.
You will also prepare a Materials Assignment in which you create your own teaching resources, discuss them and explain how they could be adapted for use at 2 levels.
The Learner Profile Assignment involves interviewing a learner, assessing their language skills and needs, writing a profile of the learner and preparing and teaching 1 hour 1:1 with that learner. Finally there will be a Language Awareness Test.
TP, journals and the Learner Profile are assessed internally by your tutors.
The Materials Assignment is sent away to be assessed externally by a Trinity College examiner.
At final moderation an external moderator from Trinity College will visit to hold
a 1: 1 Viva Interview with each trainee based on their Materials Assignment. The moderator will also interview groups of trainees to discuss their course.
Tutorials:
In addition to group feedback tutorials on TP, a group tutorial will be held early in the course to explain and clarify the assessment methods and criteria. A brief group tutorial will be held before each assignment. Your tutor will ask you to sign a written summary of tutorial discussions including an action plan. Each trainee will also be given a brief (5-10 minute) one-to-one tutorial after a few weeks to discuss your Individual Learning Plan, to be reviewed in a 20-minute tutorial at the end of the course.
Entry requirements:
GCSE English or Cambridge ESOL
IELTS 7.5 /Minimum of 2 UK A-levels or equivalent Level 3 (A-level or equivalent) qualifications or UK degree (Level 4) or equivalent qualifications.
