Course Description

This course is a part-time Foundation in English Language Teaching course that will give you solid initial training in EFL methodology and improve your level of language awareness. Trainees will also be able to do the Cambridge ESOL the KAL (Knowledge About Language) test in order to receive a qualification by the Cambridge University Examining Board.

Why do this course?
If you're not sure if TEFL is for you this course will give basic practical and theoretical EFL training and improve your level of language awareness. This course will also give you excellent preparation for the Cambridge CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL course or any 4 week TEFL course. For anyone looking to gain a basic TEFL qualification as part of any travelling or gap year where teaching English may be an option, this course will also equip you with the essential skills which will enable you to find work with some employers.

Course structure
This course will take place on every Saturday for 5 weeks. Each morning session will be divided into two parts:

1) English Language Teaching Methodology
- Knowing about and teaching the 4 language skills of reading, writing, listening
and speaking
- Teaching vocabulary
- Helping learners improve their pronunciation
- Classroom management

2) Language Awareness & Grammar
- Looking at language from a teacher's perspective
- What teachers need to know
- How to teach grammar in the classroom

There will also be opportunities during the course to do some micro-teaching in small groups and trainees will also have the opportunity to observe lessons at the centre during the week.

The students can also take TKT Module 1: Language background to language learning and teaching. Everyone who takes this test will receive a Cambridge certificate showing their results in a band from 1-4. It is not a test with a pass or fail result.

Course Entrance Requirements
Candidates should have a native level of English and be at least 18 years of age. As this course is of an academic nature applicants should be educated up to GCSE level or the equivalent.

Course Certificates
Successful trainees will receive a certificate of attendance from the course provider. Trainees who pass the Cambridge KAL (Knowledge of Language) test will also receive a certificate from the University of Cambridge Examining Board. Please note that these certificates will be issued approximately 1 month after the course finishes.

Help for Jobs

This centre actively seeks teachers for the busier summer months from mid-June until mid-September. Many former trainees have gained their first teaching experience working in our Vacation centre and residential or non-residential young learners courses. Some are also employed in the main school on general intensive courses too.

On the CELTA course, we assist trainees by giving practical guidance on CVs, preparing for a typical interview and questions to ask before accepting a post in the UK or abroad. We have a jobs board advertising international vacancies and, being long-established as a training centre with a good local reputation for the quality of our graduates, Bournemouth schools often contact us during courses when they need new teachers.
