Course Description
What is the DELTA?
The Diploma of English Language Teaching to Adults is an internationally recognised qualification for more experienced English language teachers. It is designed to allow experienced teachers to acquire new insights and a deeper understanding of the principles and practice of ELT.
During the course participants examine their current practices and beliefs, and apply the results of their learning and reflection to their current professional lives, and to more senior roles. The scheme is administered by University of Cambridge ESOL in Britain.
From Sept 2008 DELTA has changed significantly in format � from now on, DELTA will be delivered in a 3-module format.
How do you qualify for the course?
You must:
-Have an initial teaching qualification, such as CELTA or equivalent. This qualification should include a teaching practice component
-Have 2 years� adult ESOL teaching experience. For Module 2 this is a requirement. For the other 2 modules it is recommended
-Have a language level equivalent to the Council of Europe C2/C1 (Cambridge Proficiency) minimum
Course contents
Module 1 (Feb 1 � May 13 2010)
This module focuses on the background of teaching and learning.
In order to be entered for the DELTA as a CCEL candidate, candidates are required to:
-Attend all input sessions:
- Feb 1 2010 - Mon 2pm � 7pm
- Feb 2 � Feb 5 2010 - Tues � Fri 3:30pm � 7pm
- Weekly Tuesday sessions 4:30pm � 6:30pm from Tues Feb 23 � Tues May 13 2010
-Complete reading and research between sessions and in preparation for the examination
Module 2 (Feb 8 2010 � Sept 11 2010)
Module 2 focuses on developing professional practice.
In order to be entered for the DELTA as a CCEL candidate, candidates are required to:
-Attend all input sessions: Feb 8 � Feb 19 2010 Mon � Fri 12pm � 5:30pm and monthly (dates to be decided) Saturday sessions March � September 9am � 2:15pm
-Undertake unassessed, developmental observations (during the intensive component and others on the teacher�s own classes - March, April, June)
-Complete reading and research in preparation for input sessions and for teaching assignments
-Undertake 4 teaching assignments (2 on language systems and 2 on language skills) that involve an essay and assessed lesson. 1 of these will be in the intensive component, 1 in July and August (all tutor assessed) and 1 in September (externally assessed)
-Complete a 2-part assignment that focuses on experimental practice and on professional reflections (1 part due in May, the other at the end of August)
-Observe peers and other teachers
Module 3 (Oct 4 2010 � Nov 12 2010)
This module will focus on a specialist option (e.g. Younger Learners, ESOL, 1-1).
In order to be entered for the DELTA as a CCEL candidate, candidates are required to:
-Attend all input sessions:
-Intensive component Oct 4-8 2010
-Weekly Tuesday sessions 3:30pm � 7pm from Tues Oct 12 � Tues Nov 9
-Complete reading and research in preparation for input sessions and for the assignment
-Complete an extended assignment

Accommodation Options
The school can help to arrange homestay or modern dormitory accommodation if required.
Homestay Accommodation
This is available either within the walking zone or within the bus zone. During the week two meals are provided each day, and three at the weekends. Cost is $196NZ per week. There is a placement fee of $80NZ for the walking zone, and $180NZ for the bus zone.

School Details - Christchurch
Although the centre is located on the campus of its partner university, it operates as a private language school. It's modern facilities include a language laboratory, self-study centre, and computer room with access to free email.
The staff are highly qualified and experienced trainers and assessors for both the Certificate and Diploma courses for the Cambridge Integrated Language Teaching schemes.
Help for Jobs
During the CELTA course they offer 1-2 sessions relating to professional development and looking for work. They can give you information about the industry in New Zealand at the time, as well as how to go about looking for work in other countries. The course tutors are well connected to schools in other countries, and as an established teacher training centre they are regularly approached by both local and global employers wanting to recruit successful candidates.
