Course Length

The dates and prices below are for a two week, 25 hours per week course. It is possible to extend this to a 4 week course by combining Creative Methodology and Language Skills with Professional Development and Language Skills. A 4 week combination course costs £956. (please contact Cactus).

Course Description

Professional Development and Language Skills (20 hours per week)

Course Objectives

Central objective:
To help teachers focus on professional practice and knowledge and enhance their professional status and career development, both within their institutions and in the profession as a whole.

Specific objectives:
1. Encourage teachers to develop a commitment to a high standard of continuing professional growth and development.
2. Give teachers an awareness of their scope and space within the profession.
3. Promote teachers' professional collegiality, within their individual institutions and the profession as a whole.
4. Foster an indepth awareness of the latest theory and practice in ELT.
5. Encourage experimentation activities that involve the teachers in collecting data before, during and after experimenting with new skills and ideas in order to produce durable instructional change.

Methodology Tutor-led input classroom sessions supported by in-depth discussion and trainee participation. In the morning, trainees will work with an international group of fellow professionals, discussing issues in language teaching and looking at materials and activities to provide practical ideas for the classroom. Trainees will also have the opportunity to observe Oxford House College teachers putting the techniques we discuss into practice.

Course participants will increase their ability to:

1. Focus on professional practice and knowledge to enhance their professional status and career development, both within their institutions and in the profession as a whole.
2. Examine and discuss the latest theory and practice in ELT.
3. Develop a commitment to a high standard of continuing professional growth and development.
4. Be aware of their scope and space within the profession.

6. Undertake experimentation activities that involve collecting data before, during and after experimenting with new skills and ideas in order to produce durable instructional change.

Certification
Teachers receive an Oxford House College certificate which details the course duration, number of course hours and courses topic. In addition, teachers receive a comprehensive and individualised report, detailing each of the course components studied, with personal comments from the Course Director and suggestions for future professional development activities to undertake.

Each week, the full-time 25-hour courses comprise 15 hours of class tuition in a group (including 30-minutes break), and 10 hours of varied activities including observation of classes in the centre, 3 hours advanced English language skills practice and a look at some of the latest teaching materials with an educational publisher. Trainees can also attend the monthly OHC Club evening seminars with well known speakers such as Michael Swan and Mario Rinvolucri.

To join these courses you need an upper-intermediate level of English or higher.


Accommodation Options

SC = Self Catering : Meals are not provided; you can use the kitchen : £80-£105 per week depending on London zone
BB = Bed & Breakfast : Breakfast is provided. Other meals not provided. You can not use the kitchen £90-£115 per week depending on London zone
HB = Half Board Breakfast and dinner are provided. You cannot use the kitchen.

Established in 1974, and accredited by the British Council, this school is very near to Tottenham Court Road Underground station on Oxford Street. Facilities available at the college include a well-equipped Library, open from 08:30 – 19:30, a broadband Internet area and a coffee bar.
