Course Description
Course Aims
The aim is to provide participants with the basic teaching skills required for a variety of challenging teaching situations and locations overseas, especially those that are in the voluntary sector. No previous experience is necessary, as you will be guided through all stages of planning and teaching. The trainers are highly qualified and experienced, providing support and advice throughout. The course will focus on practical classroom techniques, which will be outlined in morning input sessions. Trainees will then have the chance to implement them in supervised peer teaching practice every afternoon. They will be given guidance, encouragement and feedback from their trainer, enabling them to build on their skills and grow in confidence as the week progresses. The course certificate with the Trinity College London logo will be presented to participants on completion. (Please note this requires a minimum 80% attendance).
The course is constructed to be of direct relevance to the situations we anticipate participants will be facing, focusing on major topics, such as making the best of limited resources, teaching different age groups, working with large classes, coping with mixed ability students and looking at issues of cultural difference. This initial orientation will form a sound base on which to build, thus helping to promote a successful and rewarding teaching experience.
In the input sessions, the trainers will model the methodology you are expected to use in your teaching practice. You will be encouraged and expected to participate extensively in all aspects of the course through pair work, group work and class discussion.
The main areas covered are as follows:
Classroom methodology - a guide to lesson planning; the major principles of group dynamics and classroom management; presenting, practising and revising material in a communicative way. This will be done in the context of examples of teaching a variety of subjects and ages depending on the type of teaching the volunteers will be expected to do, whether it is teaching Geography and History in South Africa or English as a Foreign Language in China.
Personal assessment V a discussion of the volunteers own learning experiences and the qualities of an effective teacher.
Focus on situation - a helpful guide to what to take, the type of student you will meet, their needs and expectations and coping with conditions and resources available.
Classroom practice - during the week, participants will take part in a class as a student and regularly do teaching practice with real students and their peers, (evening lesson planning required). In each case, the experience will be analysed to highlight practical aspects of teaching.
Accommodation Options
Participants will be expected to make their own accommodation arrangements. There are plenty of reasonably priced hostels for students and young people in Central London, which have proved popular with past trainees. The course is run in a centre near Oxford Street and Bond Street, so a quick Google search should direct you to lots of suitable accommodation within walking distance.
