Course Description
Course Content
The Foundation English Language Teaching (FELT) course was originally designed to equip graduates intending to teach with Shane English Schools in Japan, China or Taiwan with the skills necessary to survive in the classroom. The one week (five days full-time) course provides a basic procedural and methodological framework for general English teaching at elementary to intermediate levels and features input sessions and teaching practice with real EFL students.
By the end of the course, successful trainees will be able to:
plan and stage lessons that focus on new or recycled language
plan and stage lessons that focus on receptive skills work
manage a classroom effectively, using pair and group work
explore a range of visual signalling techniques
work from a coursebook, selecting and adapting tasks.
The FELT course is delivered over five days and totals 35 hours. This makes for a busy schedule, both for trainees and for tutor(s).
The course includes:
daily teaching practice (TP) sessions with feedback
 live observation of experienced teachers
 a variety of input sessions.
The following areas will be covered in the input sessions:
1. description and practical exploration of the PPP/CRA model
2. ways to present new language ways to practice language
3. accuracy vs fluency
4. three LA sessions that explore form, function/meaning and phonology
5. a separate session on phonology (phonemes, stress and intonation)
6. exploiting skills work
7. working with vocabulary
8. concept checking
9. error correction (oral and written)
10. 1:1 and small group work
11. recycling and revision
12. young learners
13. published materials
Typical timetable
Input sessions take place in the morning. These include sessions on observation of errors, concept checking, accuracy and fluency, vocabulary, presentation, preparation of Teaching Practice and a foreign language lesson. Teaching Practice and feedback will mainly take place in the afternoons.
Accommodation Options
Participants will be expected to make their own accommodation arrangements. There are plenty of reasonably priced hostels for students and young people in Central London, which have proved popular with past trainees. The course is run in a centre near Oxford Street and Bond Street, so a quick Google search should direct you to lots of suitable accommodation within walking distance.
