Certificate in Teaching Younger Learners Durban, South Africa

Foundation in Teaching English to Younger Learners

Important Information

The FTEYL (Foundation in Teaching English to Young Learners) is a course for graduates new to EnglishLanguage Teaching and interested in teaching English to children as a foreign or second language overseas or here in South Africa, especially in rural and underprivileged communities.

It’s suitable for people who would like to work internationally (on a short or long-term basis), or settle
abroad permanently as well as people who would like to teach in the educational sector or privately from home. As the methodology taught on this course is very different to traditional teaching methodology, people already involved in the education industry will also find this course of great interest and of great value.

On completion of the course, participants will have the option of going on to teach at community projects run by Wild at Heart and International House Durban – these projects are aimed at uplifting and empowering rural communities, for instance, teaching Masai children in Kenya.

Customer Feedback

The quality of the CELTA trainers was very high, they were always available and extremely supportive. The school was also of a very high standard, I was thoroughly impressed.

The course was very intensive but extremely informative. I feel a lot of ground was covered in four weeks. It was very interesting and highly rewarding and by the end I felt quite competent and well prepared.

Kyla Calder, 2006

Course Description

The course is designed as an Introduction to Young Learner Teaching (TYL) and does not attempt to cover a comprehensive range of English Language Teaching (ELT) concepts. However, its combination of solid theoretical ELT and TYL methodology and observed teaching practice is designed to provide course participants with a solid foundation for teaching English to children, especially in rural and underprivileged communities where teachers need to be able to teach in a challenging environment with minimal resources. Participants will also be able to use this basic survival skills course as a foundation for teaching English to children in other contexts.

Main aims

1. To introduce participants to English Language Teaching (ELT) and Teaching Languages to
Young Learners (TYL)

2. To introduce participants to key concepts, approaches and methods for Teaching English to
Young Learners (TEYL)

3. To prepare participants for the experience of teaching in rural and underprivileged
communities through sound classroom practice based on well-founded TEYL principles

Key areas of the course

Preparation for the course

It will be assumed that all participants will have done all the pre-course reading and research assigned to them at the time of the interview.

Participation in input

As the FTEYL course is a very practical teacher training course, mornings are made up of methodology and language awareness input sessions as well as time for project work. Participants should be ready to attend all sessions and to participate in tasks and activities set by tutors. These sessions aim to provide participants with a basic knowledge of teaching English to Young Learners.

Teaching practice

The afternoons are reserved for teaching practice (TP), where you will develop your teaching skills by
teaching non-English speaking young learner students. There will be a total of 3 hours of teaching
practice although participants should expect to teach 4 times (e.g 2 x 30 minutes and 2 x 60 minutes).
The students will be non-English-speaking children aged no younger than 4 and no older than 16.
Prospective candidates should note that although the age range may vary, trainees will teach two distinct age groups, for example 6/7 year olds and 10/11 year olds. This aspect of the course is fundamental and participants who do not complete it, run the risk of not being issued with a Certificate of Completion. These lessons are observed by your teacher trainer. After TP, there are reflection, feedback and lesson preparation sessions. Feedback on lessons will be both oral and written and provide participants with guidance for improving their performance. Tutors will identify the lesson’s strengths and weaknesses and identify areas that require further development. Participants will be expected to participate in feedback by displaying the ability to accept and act on advice and suggestions. In addition, course participants will be given guidance and support by tutors to help them prepare each of the observed lessons. You will also participate in weekly private tutorials with your teacher trainer. When you are not teaching, you will be observing your fellow trainees teaching and you will also spend 2 hours observing experienced teachers teaching. The aim here is to demonstrate what good classroompractice is and to serve as a model for participants’ teaching.

Homework

In addition to the above, participants will be set two assignments which must be completed during the
course and be required to do project work and homework each evening (a minimum of one hour per day).In the evenings and at weekends, you will be required to do project work and homework each evening (a minimum of 1 hour per day), as well as lesson preparation, which can be quite time consuming.

General

You will be expected to keep a detailed file of all course work and materials.
All participants are expected to be professional, courteous and flexible in dealing with IH Durban, their
peers and the students they teach. The course is intensive and very practical. Participants are expected to work as a team to implement the methodology learned during the pre-course reading and during the input sessions. Participants who intend working on a Wild at Heart/IH Durban community project on completion of the course should note that failure to act professionally and demonstrate teaching suitability throughout the course may result in the participant not being offered a position.

The FTEYL course syllabus covers:

-Language awareness
-The learner, the teacher and the teaching / learning context
-Planning for effective teaching of young learners of English
-Classroom management and teaching skills for teaching English to young learners
-Finding and developing resources and materials for teaching English to young
-Dealing with context-specific issues, especially poor and under-developed communities

What are the requirements for FTEYL?

Each prospective course participant will normally need to ensure that they can comply with the
following requirements:

• You should be at least 18 years old and have the equivalent of entry level into higher education (such as a matric exemption, A levels or entrance level to college, university, technikon or other tertiary study). You do not need to have a degree or diploma in English (or any other subject) nor be a teacher or have any teaching experience to qualify.

• Participants must pass the Pre-Course Interview. This is divided into three sections, a set of written tasks which you complete at home, a second set of written tasks which you complete at the institute and an oral interview. You will be interviewed (either by phone or face-to-face) by a designated IH Durban tutor at a mutually suitable time. You should be able to demonstrate that you have a very good level of spoken and written English and a good awareness of the English language and how it works. Remember that you do not have to be a teacher already, but you must demonstrate that you have the potential to become a good language teacher.

• They will be able to do a minimum of 30 hours preparation for the course (this will be specified at the interview and will include the thorough reading of at least one book).

• They are willing and able to attend the full course – 50 hours – of face-to-face time and complete homework and project tasks set by the tutors each day.

• Prospective candidates should note that should they wish to teach on one of the Wild at Heart projects after the course, they will have to prove that they have police clearance.
