Course Description
The Trinity College Certificate in TESOL (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an initial teacher training course and qualification for people wishing to teach English as a foreign language in this country or overseas. The qualification is recognised by the public sector and private language schools and colleges in the UK and abroad. It is also recognised by the British Council.
Who is the course for?
It is for people who are native speakers of English, or non-native speakers who have a high level English language qualification (IELTS Score 7 on all sub scores or above; TOEFL 600 or 250 with computer-based score or Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English) and who wish to teach English as a Foreign Language. No previous teaching or tutoring experience is required, although it would be an advantage. Good communication skills and an interest in working with students from many different backgrounds are essential. You should be 18 years or over at the time of entry to the course.
Previous educational qualifications
‘A’ levels or Level 3 equivalents are the minimum. Proof of qualifications will be requested at interview. Experience of higher education or training is an advantage.
The course includes 90 hours of supervised input including lectures, workshops and guided private or group work and tutorials. You will also be expected to do background reading and complete a number of assignments as follows:
1. Teaching skills: assessment includes a minimum of 6 hours' observed teaching practice & lesson plans; a teaching practice journal and a guided observation journal (based on the observation of classes given by experienced teachers with real English language learners).
2. Language Awareness: assignment (this may take the form of an exam)
3. Learner Profile: written linguistic profile and needs analysis for one learner of English based on a 60 - 90 minute interview
4. Materials Assignment: the production of two classroom materials and a written rationale and evaluation for each which is externally moderated.
5. Unknown Language: a journal reflecting on and analysing the lessons you will take part in.
Assessment
Assessment is 43% on written assignments and 57% on teaching practice. A final result is awarded after external moderation by Trinity College. All parts of the course must be completed and all assignments and teaching practice must be successful for a Trinity certificate to be awarded.
Course fees
The course fees include all tuition and materials provided by your course tutor. It also entitles the student to access all the facilities and services listed above. Recommended books for background reading are available on loan, although it may be advisable to purchase one or two of the most commonly referred to for your own professional development. There is a £30 College Registration Fee to be paid on enrolment.
