Course Description

This course develops the practical skills necessary to become a language teacher, acquire a pedagogic understanding of English grammar and vocabulary, gain the confidence and classroom skills to teach English and develop the insight into your own teaching style and strengths to enable you to fully develop your teaching potential.

Unlike the MA TESOL, the Cambridge CELTA gives you the practical ability to teach which is so sought after internationally.

Candidates are usually graduates or undergraduates, but those with equivalent experience will be considered. You need not have English as your first language provided that your awareness and competence in written and spoken English enables you to follow the course without hindrance. The minimum age is 18.

This 4-week course is intensive, and requires a full-time commitment. Seminars, workshops and observation of experienced teachers take up roughly half the contact time. Teaching practice takes up the other half, and is conducted in small groups with a teaching practice supervisor. You teach for a total of 6 hours at two different levels with real classes of multilingual English students. Teaching practice includes guided preparation of the lesson to be taught, classroom teaching practice and observation of peers, followed by analysis, reflection and feedback. Completion of lesson planning, the four set written assignments and the portfolio of coursework take place out of class. Individual and group tutorials are held to monitor and discuss progress, and offer guidance and support.

Programme content

- Input sessions based upon specifications for CELTA produced by the University of Cambridge covering: language analysis, lesson and course planning, classroom management techniques and strategies, teaching techniques, resources and materials, and professional development

- Supervised teaching practice with adult students in specially organised classes

- Lesson observation of experienced teachers within our schools

- Completion of a range of practically focused written assignments.

Assessment: Candidates are assessed continuously during the programme and there is no final exam. An external assessor, appointed by UCLES, moderates each course.

There are two components of assessment:

Teaching Practice: candidates teach 6 hours at two different levels and assessment is based on overall performance at the end of the 6 hours.

Written assignments: there are 4 written assignments: a case study of a student, language analysis, resources and materials, and a reflection on classroom teaching.

Application procedure: Before being enrolled, all applicants need to complete an application form, successfully complete an application 'test' and attend an interview (if a personal interview is impractical this can be done by phone).

There is considerable demand for places on certain programme dates. You are welcome to phone in and enquire about availability. Please contact us for further details and an application pack.

Course Features

Age: Candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates between 18 and 20 can be accepted at the centre's discretion
Education: Candidates are usually university graduates. The requirement is that candidates should have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
English: Candidates do not need to have English as their first language, but must have a standard of English which will enable them to teach a range of levels

School Details - New York

The school is conveniently located in the heart of Manhattan, easily accessible by train, subway or bus. The building is situated on Seventh Avenue, just a few blocks from the Empire State Building, Times Square, Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and Macy\'s. The modern and well-equipped school is bustling with students from all over the world, and at full capacity can hold 600 language students. CELTA course participants get full access to the teacher\'s staffroom, including the teachers\' library and computers. There is also free wireless internet connection.

New York
New York, New York...they don\'t come much bigger than this. This is possibly the most exciting and upbeat city in the world. It is also one of the most densely packed - and we\'re talking people, skyscrapers, multinational office blocks, first class entertainment facilities, the lot. You may have seen it all on tv but up close it\'s even more impressive. Do as New Yorkers do and take to the subway, sidewalk or in-line skates for a first-hand view. Iconic yet unmissable are the lights of Times Square, the art at the Lincoln Centre, the bustle of the United Nations, the glitz of Broadway, the tranquility of Central Park, the popular subculture of Downtown and the huge tempting stores of Macy\'s and Bloomingdales. Do as little or as much as you want - it doesn\'t really matter as just being there is an experience in itself.
