Course Description

The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is recognised by the British Council as an initial qualification in English Language Teaching. Our Cactus approved centre in Edinburgh is a recognised centre to prepare trainees for this qualification. This is an introductory course for candidates with little or no experience of English Language Teaching. The intensive course provides initial teacher training over a period of four weeks.

Trainees

You must be at least 20 years old at the start of the course and have a standard of education which would allow entry to Higher Education in your own country. You must have an awareness of language and be able to analyse and use it effectively in both its written and spoken forms.

A typical day

09:00 - 12:45 Seminars and workshops on teaching techniques, methodology and language analysis. Assisted lesson preparation. Observation of teaching

12:45 - 13:45 Lunch

13:45 - 14:45 Seminars and workshops

15:00 - 17:30 Teaching practice and feedback

Content

The course covers the basic principles of teaching and learning a foreign language including:

- classroom management

- language analysis

- adapting materials

- teaching techniques

- presenting new language

- lesson planning

The course is essentially practical and the areas studied in the morning sessions are applied in the classroom in the afternoons. In addition to covering the required syllabus stipulated by Trinity College, London, the course includes sessions on Finding a Job, Teaching Young People, Business English and teaching One-to-One.

Teaching Practice

You will have teaching practice sessions with classes of volunteer students at at least two levels. Initially, these lessons are quite short and you receive considerable guidance from your tutors. As the course progresses, these lessons become longer and you are expected to make more decisions about what and how to teach. By the end of the course, although you will still require some support, you will be ready to teach in most English Language Teaching situations throughout the world.

Assessment and Certificates

Assessment is continuous and all aspects of your coursework are taken into consideration: attendance, assignments, teaching, participation, attitude and potential as a teacher. You are clearly informed of your progress in tutorials and receive written feedback on your lessons and coursework. Grades and certificates are awarded to successful candidates by Trinity College, London.

Employment

We will give you advice and information on finding a job in ELT. We keep an up-to-date noticeboard on the teaching situation in different countries abroad. There are a large number of temporary summer programme posts available each year, as well as in other accredited organisations. We are regularly sent details of vacancies in the UK and abroad and these will be passed on to you. Another option is to teach in your home with Regent Language Homestay.

How to apply

Applicants should complete and return the application form (contact us 0845 130 4775 and we will forward one to you by email attachment) to the centre running the course. We will contact you and arrange a convenient time for an interview with a Course Tutor. At interview you will be asked to complete a short language awareness task.
