it's your first time...
You might be considering TEFL
as a gap year option, or something more long term to provide a career
break or lifestyle change.
The most widely-accepted 'industry standard'
qualifications are the Cambridge CELTA or Trinity
CertTESOL (see glossary),
designed to take you from English speaker to competent English teacher
in four intensive weeks (part-time courses also exist). The abundant "mini-TEFL
courses" might appear easier on your savings, but these can tie you
down to one school or location, and make the task of finding work (or
jumping ship) significantly more difficult. We also think you owe it to
those you teach to make a good job of their education.

Teaching English abroad is a special thing
to do: it's about travelling the world, meeting amazing people, and "giving
something back". It can also be tough at times, which is why it is
important to be well prepared before you go. Beyond the qualification,
being a TEFL teacher requires an enthusiasm for teaching English, an empathy
with learners and an interest in discovering new languages and cultures.

place on a TEFL Course To secure a place on a CELTA or CertTESOL course, you need to complete an application form and attend an interview. Only at the end of the interview will you know (a) if you have been accepted on the course and (b) whether the course date you require is still available. Hence we urge you to apply earlier rather than later, knowing you are still free to choose whether or not you to go ahead and make a booking.
