School Details - Paris

This is a centre of excellence for Teacher Training and offers a range of courses for those who want to become language teachers starting with the Cambridge CELTA.

All teacher trainers at the school in Paris are highly experienced E.F.L. teachers, holders of the Cambridge Diploma (D.E.L.T.A.) and are officially recognised Cambridge Language assessment trainers and oral examiners. They are impassioned by teacher training and seek constantly to raise standards.

The school is located in the heart of Paris near Ile de la Cite, Pond des Arts and Boulevard Saint-Germain and just minutes away from Saint-Michel - Notre-Dame, Mabilon and Odeon metro stations.

Course Description

13-week teacher training course leading to the Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). The course combines collaborative online study with face-to-face teaching practice.

Collaborative online study means that trainees must complete assignments, online tasks and units on time, but can work flexibly, where and when it suits them to carry out the work. There is also quite a lot of community work, including forums and live rooms, that helps trainees feel part of a group.

The lesson planning, teaching practice, evaluation and feedback on the course is face-to-face, and trainees have the same experience as trainees who opt for the CELTA course with the face-to-face classroom study.

Course Content
The course is essentially practical: every theory and teaching technique introduced in the lectures and seminars is, wherever possible, demonstrated and practised in real teaching situations with foreign students of English.

Topics and teaching areas covered include:

- The general principles of teaching and learning a foreign language
- The English language, structure, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, styles.
- Training and developing the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Learner motivation, class management; the group / individuals
- Lesson planning, course, planning, timetables and syllabuses, testing and grading.
- Classroom techniques: presentation, practice, checking, error analysis and correction.
- Classroom materials: text books, supplementary materials, audio visual materials.
- Classroom aids and equipment: board, audio equipment, visual aids, OHP, film, video.

Written Assignments
There are four written assignments to be done during the course, focusing on the following areas:

- Language analysis
- Adult learners of English
- Skills development
- Professional development.

Course Format
Trainees have access to CELTA tasks and course materials online. Tasks can be planned around other commitments and completed at a time to suit each trainee. Much of the course involves interactive tasks, guided video observation, and group work. It is important that trainees are willing to exchange information and ideas with each other and as part of the group during online discussions.

All teaching practice is face-to-face. It is essential that trainees are able to give and receive constructive criticism with their peers during teaching practice feedback sessions. Teaching practice is divided into 12 teaching practice days. 100% attendance is required during each session. You will participate in lessons in the morning between 09:30 and 14:30 and experience teaching learners at two different levels (pre-intermediate and upper-intermediate). The afternoons will be free for you to work on assignments or to prepare your lessons.

Thursday & Friday
Teaching practice takes place at the school every 2 weeks approximately

09.00 - 10.00 Assisted Lesson planning
10.00 - 13.15 Teaching practice
14.00 - 14.45 Feedback
15.00 - 17.00 Assisted Lesson planning

Course Attendance
Trainees must attend 100% of the course and meet the required number of teaching practice hours in order to be certified by Cambridge.

Assessor
An external Cambridge assessor ensures the course complies with Cambridge regulations and is present for one or two days during the third or fourth week of the course.

Certification
Grades are awarded at the end of the course, with 'Pass' indicating the basic standard. Trainees who perform significantly better may be awarded Pass 'B' or Pass 'A'. Candidates who achieve the required standard will receive the CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH Language Assessment Certificate. Those who do not meet this standard are provided with a certificate of attendance. Each trainee will receive a report issued by the school, comprising a written assessment of progress and ability.

Timetable

Orientation Day at the Centre 9:30 - 16:30. Modules are done online. 12 Teaching Practice days to be done face-to-face on Thursdays and Fridays (from 9.30-16.30) every 2 weeks.

Help for Jobs

The course will provide trainees with the necessary teaching skills to equip them for the ESOL marketplace. In addition, in the final week there will be a dedicated input session on how the TEFL job market in France works. The centre has a great deal of experience in recruitment for their own clients and for recommendations towards other worldwide organisations.
