The centre is a friendly school in Glasgow's West End. They welcome students from all over the world, and teach English as well as a range of foreign languages. The centre pride themselves on the level of support they offer their students. They look forward to welcoming potential teachers and helping them on the first steps to a new career in EFL.

This is a Blended Celta course which means that the input sessions will be delivered online and the teaching practice sessions can be attended in a block of two weeks.

Working online allows you to study at times which suit you, and you can even work around your job or family commitments. The tutor is there to support you throughout the course and you’ll have the opportunity to share ideas with other course participants.

During your two weeks at at the centre, you’ll undertake the teaching practice element of the course. This runs from 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday (including any bank holidays which fall during these weeks). Although this is an intensive 2 weeks, you will be able to focus solely on your teaching.

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive the same certificate as for a face-to-face course.

The CELTA is a standardised course so no matter where you study, you will be assessed through two methods – ongoing continuous assessment of teaching practice and written assignments. Candidates will be assessed on the five following areas:

• Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context
• Language analysis and awareness
• Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
• Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
• Developing teaching skills and professionalism


Course Components

Face-to-Face Input Sessions

These sessions are intended to help raise the candidate's awareness of a range of approaches and techniques for teaching through tutor demonstrations. There will also be guidance for effective lesson planning and the chance to discuss ideas and lesson plans with your fellow candidates.

Teaching practice

Each candidate will undertake a total of six hours of teaching practice over the course. Your classes will be made up of adult volunteer students. There will be at least six students in each class and the level of the classes could range from Beginner to Advanced level.
You will receive both written and oral feedback on your teaching practice. After each teaching practice you will have to complete a written self-evaluation where you consider four main areas:

- Planning
- Teaching
- Awareness of learners
- Reflection on what you see as your strengths and weaknesses.

Your tutor will also provide oral feedback following each teaching practice covering the four areas above. Then he or she will assess the overall performance and discuss which areas of weakness you want to address in the following teaching practice.

Observations

As part of your course you will observe experienced teachers. You will see classes at a variety of levels. You will observe a total of six hours of lessons, though up to three hours may be filmed or given by your tutor. In addition to this, you will also carry out peer observations of other candidates. These observations will raise awareness of different methodologies, approaches and classroom management techniques which you can then trial in your own teaching practice.

Written Assignments

There are a total of four written assignments to be completed over the course period. Each one should be between 750-1,000 words in length. The four areas the written assignments cover are:

- Focus on the learner
- Language-related tasks
- Skills assignment
- Lessons from the classroom

You will draw on your observations, reading and own teaching practice to complete these tasks and will be awarded a pass or fail grade for each. It is possible to resubmit a task if you have received a fail grade and can still pass the course overall, provided that you have shown you have met all the requirements in the other areas of the course.
