Course Description

This is a skills development course for experienced teachers and those who complete it successfully will have an excellent position in an ever-specialising ELT market. ENGLISH UK and Trinity College London provide moderation for this qualification.

PARTICIPANTS
We normally require applicants to have a first degree and a relevant ELT qualification. Although not essential, one year’s ELT/TESOL experience is also highly desirable. Non native-teachers who satisfy these requirements and whose English is at a level appropriate to following the course are welcome to apply. The course will be appropriate both for experienced general English teachers, and people from the business world, ELT qualified, who wish to move into business English teaching.

COURSE AIMS
The course aims to assist more experienced teachers of general English to acquire a good working range of knowledge and practical skills necessary for the effective teaching of English for Business. NB: the course is not intended for those with substantial experience in teaching English for Business.

COURSE PROGRAMME
The course is run over ten working days and provides 50 contact hours, plus some evening and weekend assignments in addition to a final post-course assessed project. There are 11 core modules:

  • What is Business English?
  • Concepts and language in a business context
  • Needs analysis and research
  • Materials and resources
  • Internationalism and culture
  • Professional development and employment
  • Course and syllabus design
  • Methods, approaches and techniques
  • Business communication skills development (oral/aural)
  • Business communication skills development (reading and writing)
  • Evaluation and assessment

The location for the training is the Executive Centre at IH London. This gives participants a chance to meet business people from all over the world and acquire, first hand, useful insights into language, culture and the international corporate world in general. Cutting edge classroom technology, free coffee and a welcome lunch in the first week are also special features of the course.

ASSESSMENT
Participants must attend and participate in all components of the course. Then, for full certification, they must submit a written project based on a practical teaching scenario (3000 to 4000 words). This is submitted within twelve weeks of the end of the course, marked by IH London and then moderated by Trinity College London.

The school is very well equipped and all trainees are encouraged to use all the facilities available. The library has a huge number of books covering all TEFL related subjects. All staff are friendly and accommodating. The tutors were great and very supportive - and absolutely brilliant teachers themselves. It was a very positive experience all round. I never thought it was possible to learn this much in such a short period of time.
