School Details - Manchester

Established in 1991 the school is the longest established private English language school in the city. It is located in central Manchester close to all the main train and bus stations, cafes, bars and shops.

The CELTA courses are validated by the University of Cambridge English Language Assessment which has a well-earned reputation for academic excellence; its qualifications are recognised and accepted by teaching institutions world-wide.

The school was voted Best CELTA Training Centre in the UK 2013 by Cambridge English Language Assessment at their Centenary Conference in April 2013.

Course Description

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)

This pre-service teacher training course leads to the award of the internationally recognised certificate. The Cambridge certificate is an essential first step in a career in TESOL. The qualification is an essential minimum requirement for teachers in a British Council accredited school. Successful participants will be able to use this qualification to teach in schools in the UK and overseas. Over 10,000 candidates complete a CELTA course each year.

The Cambridge examining body has strict guidelines for teaching the CELTA qualification, so course content and teaching will be quite standard across most schools. However, the school in Manchester tries to offer their students the best service possible within these guidelines such as:

- Constant support throughout the course, for example:

-> regular tutorials throughout the course to track students' progress and to help
with any problems they have

-> lots of practical help, for example finding material, writing the lessons etc.

- High pass rate: in 2013 our pass rate was 100% with 43% of candidates achieving a Pass A or Pass B on successful completion of the course

- Feedback about job vacancies: the school receives a lot of information about job
vacancies around the world and they feed this information back to their students.

Course Aim

To empower the trainees to develop a greater understanding of the learning and teaching process. The Academy encourages participants to adopt a reflective, questioning and critical approach, central to which is the participant's own experience, attitudes and beliefs. Trainers will be guides, facilitators and resources rather than fonts of all knowledge. Courses are hands-on, innovative, challenging, and enjoyable.

The Cambridge CELTA Course Online

This is a blended learning course that combines collaborative online study with face-to-face teaching practice. Collaborative online study means that trainees must complete assignments, online tasks and units on time, but can work flexibly, where and when it suits them to carry out the work. There is also quite a lot of community work, including forums and live rooms, that helps trainees feel part of a group.

The lesson planning, teaching practice, evaluation and feedback on the course is face-to-face, and trainees have the same experience as trainees who opt for the CELTA course with the face-to-face classroom study.

Who takes the course?

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is intended for those with no previous experience who wish to enter the profession and for teachers with some experience but no previous training in the field.
All participants must have a very good command of English in order to be able to cope with the demands of the course. They must be able to express themselves clearly and accurately both orally and in writing. Participants should have a high level of motivation and commitment and be able to work as open and reflective members of a team.

Course Contents

The CELTA course covers the following syllabus:

* Language Analysis and Awareness
* The Learner, the Teacher and the Teaching/Learning Context
* Planning for Effective Teaching
* Classroom Management Skills
* Teaching Procedures and Techniques
* Resources and Materials
* Professional Development
* Classroom Observation
* Teaching Practice

How am I assessed?

The assessment is continuous and integrated.
 continuous means that assessment takes place throughout the course
 integrated means that both assessed components (teaching practice and assignments) contribute to the overall grade. Any one assessment can cover a number of topics and objectives in the syllabus.

Teaching practice:

Teaching practice is an integral part of the course. The lesson planning, teaching practice, evaluation and feedback on the course is face-to-face, and trainees have the same experience as trainees who opt for the CELTA course with the face-to-face classroom study. Teaching practice on all courses is internally assessed by the course tutors and externally moderated by a Cambridge English-approved external assessor.

Timetable

You need to attend teaching practice at the school on 10 days. Teaching practice takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30pm to 8.30pm and in week 5, 6, 7 and 11, 12, 13 of the course.

Customer Feedback

Very good, very great input sessions. A thoroughly rewarding experience!!!
-Philip Dickie-

The course was very intensive which I was fully aware of before I started. Even though the workload was heavy I found the course very stimulating and engaging. I enjoyed the teaching practice. Overall a very positive experience.
-Catherine Anderson-

The school and the quality of trainers were to the highest of standards. They always had time to help us trainees when we needed it. The course was intensive, as it suggests, and it did not let up for the four weeks. The amount of work was however worth it, as I learned a lot about how to teach EFL, and has given me a real enthusiasm to go out and find work within the TEFL industry.
-Matthew Todd-

Teaching was first class and the level of support was excellent. I enjoyed the whole course, well worth the cost!
-Sue Badger-

Help for Jobs

The CELTA course includes a session on Future opportunities: A career in EFL. The session takes place at the end of the course and aims to provide guidance on how to look for a job. Interview format as well as possible questions are also discussed in order to further clarify the process of job seeking.

In addition, trainees are given details of vacancies that may be going at the time and directed to take a closer look at the jobs board in the training room. The school has regular contact with various recruitment agencies and schools worldwide and whenever details of jobs are passed on to us they are posted on the jobs board.

We are not a recruitment agency and therefore we cannot guarantee that we will find a job for trainees on successful completion of the course. However, we do give help and offer practical advice in the later stages of each course.
