Course Description
The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is an internationally recognised initial qualification for English language teaching and leads to exciting job opportunities both in the UK and overseas. The full-time CELTA course last four weeks.
Candidates attend input sessions in the moning where they are introduced to teaching methodology and theory. In the afternoon they teach classes of the relevant age group and size for a total of 6 hours. In addition, they observe experienced teachers for a total of 6 hours, and maintain and submit a portfolio of all course work, including all written assignments and materials related to teaching practice.
There is no final examination. Candidates are graded and assessed by the trainers on a continuous basis in two components: Teaching and Written Assignments. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge University to moderate the course and the assessment of the candidates, visits all courses. The certificate is awarded to candidates who meet the course requirements and whose performance meets, or exceeds, the criteria in both assessed components.
The course is an interesting and rewarding experience that leaves trainees with a qualification and skills for life.
The course is intensive with a minimum of 120 hours of training. All applicants need to bear in mind that in addition to the course hours, a further minimum of 80 hours is needed in the evenings and at weekends for the required reading, research, written assignments and lesson preparation.
Typical day:
Students arrive before 9:00 and meet in the input room. Input sessions then take place between 9:00 and 13:00. Input sessions are interactive and can be on topics ranging from Phonology to Correcting Spoken Errors. Trainees then have an hour for lunch. The afternoons are devoted to teaching practice. Another integral part of the course is lesson observation. Trainees observe experienced teachers as part of the morning input sessions while peer observation takes place in the afternoon. Feedback is given after teaching practice. Trainees can expect to leave the college at about 17:00.

Help for Jobs
Career advice and counselling are included in the course, and sessions which focus on helping trainees to find work take place routinely throughout the course. In addition, opportunities for employment often arise in all of our year-round schools, as well as in our rapidly growing Junior Summer Camp operations, although we don't guarantee a job with us at the end of the course. We give references to all of our trainees and have many contacts throughout the world. All our trainers have experience of working in a range of different countries and are able to pass on this experience to trainees.
