The centre is a teacher training institute and ELT Consultancy. It is an internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL teacher training centre and the only Cambridge ESOL (previously UCLES) approved centre for CELTA, ICELT and DELTA courses in Turkey.
It has successfully trained thousands of EFL teachers since it first began running courses in Istanbul in 1987.
It also offers consultancy, recruitment and placement services for ELT (English Language Teaching) institutions worldwide.
The training centre operates in two buildings in the heart of Istanbul near the Bosphorus, the Metro and the Metro bus. The team of experienced trainers is committed to raising teaching standards in Turkey, and over the years the consultancy services have provided expert assistance to universities, schools and a range of ELT institutions in Turkey and the region.
Course Description
What is the CELTA?
The CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a pre-service Teacher Development programme covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching English. It is an internationally-recognised qualification with no expiry.
Why do the CELTA at this school?
We have been training teachers for over 20 years
We have an excellent team of on-site trainers
We offer a high level of support and guidance
Our centre is easily accessible with various transport links
We have an online classroom to support your face-to-face learning
Our course participants come from an eclectic mix of nationalities and backgrounds
We give you two reference books to be used during and after the course
Who does the CELTA?
People with no previous teaching experience - the course provides you with the basic tools and techniques you will need for teaching English as a foreign language
People with some teaching experience - although the course is a pre-service course, we have many applicants who have some classroom experience. For those people, the CELTA helps to refine some of the teaching skills they already have as well as introducing them to new ideas and techniques
NB: Turkish teachers with 'formasyon' - combining 'formasyon' with the CELTA makes you an attractive candidate for any teaching position in Turkey
What does the face to face course involve?
The course consists of 120 contact hours which is divided up as follows:
Input sessions (40 hours face to face with on-line support)
6 hours of Teaching Practice (observed by experienced tutors with volunteer students)
Supervised lesson planning (usually with teaching points to guide you on what and how to teach)
Feedback on teaching practice (done in a group format with your tutor and peers)
Peer observation of teaching practice
Tutorials (one-to-one consultation with your tutor at least twice during the course)
Four written assignments (designed to support and reflect what you do in the classroom)
6 experienced teacher observations (built into the course programme)
Cambridge also recommends a further 120 hours of self-study time (background reading, assignment writing, lesson preparation e.t.c.)
Coursework and teaching are internally assessed and externally moderated by Cambridge ESOL.
Candidates who successfully complete the course portfolio will be awarded a certificate from Cambridge ESOL at the levels of Pass, Pass B or Pass A.
Regular Internet access throughout the duration of your course (and in some cases before your course begins) is very important.
It is not an absolute requirement but we strongly advise you to use a word-processor for all your written work.
We maintain a number of desktop PCs at the school which trainees can use but demand for these can sometimes outstrip supply. We therefore also advise you to bring your own laptop to attended courses if you have one.
Wireless Internet access is freely available throughout the building.
