School Details - Oxford Central

The school is located in the very heart of the old city only a stone's throw from bus stops for all the city's major bus routes.

Summer courses take place in our dedicated teacher training centre which has excellent modern premises including a computer suite with free WiFi internet access, a study area and well-stocked and up-to-date resource room. At other times of the year courses are run in our main school offering the same high level of resources and facilities. The school is committed to offering the very best in UK-based language teaching and students on a variety of courses thrive in the welcoming and dynamic atmosphere found here.

Accommodation is not included in the course price, but the school can arrange for you to stay either a student house or with a local family.

Out and About
As good a landmark as any is the medieval Carfax Tower, offering a wonderful view of the city as well as a useful means of orientation when setting off round Oxford's many colleges and courtyards. Each with its own character and list of former celebrity students, Christ Church boasts England's smallest cathedral, the choir at Magdalen College religiously sees in May Day with a hymn at 6am, and dinner at Queens College is still announced with a trumpet. And where else would you find all these students but at the famous Bodleian Library, with its outstanding Gothic Divinity School. But of course it's not all about work, and Oxford does its students proud with an equally fine range of eating and drinking establishments - just look beneath the surface of the expensive tourist and parent traps and you'll find a delightful range of cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes.

Course Description

You complete the same course curriculum
You are taught by the same experienced, supportive team

The Online CELTA course also includes sessions on how to teach online and includes a pre-course Tech Orientation Week. Technical orientation week - these special workshops run one week before the CELTA course and train students in using online tools essential for the CELTA course

CELTA is a course giving you a thorough grounding in all aspects of teaching the English language to adults. One of the most widely taken qualifications of its kind, thousands of people each year choose CELTA to open up a world of exciting English language teaching opportunities. Part of the University of Cambridge and validated by Cambridge English Language Assessment, the Cambridge CELTA course is recognised and accepted by teaching institutions worldwide.

Course Content
Technical orientation As part of the package you can take part in the pre-course Tech Orientation Week for candidates who wish to have some training with our online platforms. This will allow you to be fully prepared and confident when the course starts.

Teaching Practice The course is very practical in nature and teaching practice takes place using Zoom under the guidance of your tutor. Course time is set aside for the preparation of these lessons and your tutor will assist and guide you throughout your time with us. You will gain experience in teaching at two distinct levels.

Language Awareness This component is designed to familiarise trainees with aspects of the English language. It focuses on grammar and structure (form), meaning in context (function) and the sound system of the English language (phonology).

Written Assignments Candidates need to complete 4 written assignments which range from formal language analysis to a study of teaching materials. They are graded on a pass or fail basis and candidates must pass 3 out of 4 assignments.

Methodology of Language Teaching & Learning This involves the analysis and appreciation of various methods, styles and strategies for both language teaching and learning. You are also introduced to a range of teaching aids and classroom management techniques.

Live Online Observations During the course you will be timetabled for 6 hours of live online observation. This will give you the opportunity to see experienced teachers in action. These observations are complemented by specific observation tasks, which will be referred to throughout the course.

Applicants must:

- Be at least 18 (it is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at the centre's discretion)
- Have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English, which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels (C1 on the CEFR)
- Have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of practical teaching

Help for Jobs

During the CELTA course, trainees will attend an input session dedicated to finding work beyond the course and professional development in TEFL. Assistance will be given in finding job placements and trainees will receive guidance in preparing job applications. Through a network of partner schools and CELTA alumni in the UK and around the world, the centre puts a range of contacts at trainees' disposal.

During the course BSC school managers will deliver a Q and A session on 'getting your first TEFL job'. Guest speakers from recruitment companies and language schools are also invited to give job placement advice and trainees are provided with regular updates on local and worldwide vacancies via the Jobs Board. There is also useful information in the Teachers' Survival Kit booklet provided at the end of the course for post-course support and trainees are invited to join the centre's Facebook page and stay abreast of job opportunities long after they have left the centre.
