Humanitarian Volunteering

What we're trying to provide in this section is information from charitable trusts and non-profit organisations, who are much less interested in giving you a nice holiday and much more concerned with organising support for people in particular need around the world.

This is the 'raw edge' of the volunteering industry, and it's not so much about paying your money and signing up, but much more about being interviewed, screened, analysed and scrutinised, to see if you're up to the job.

Genuine volunteering, then, is generally about spending your money to get you to your chosen country, and possibly being given food and shelter when you're there, or perhaps having to pay for that too.

ROKPA   Cactus has for a long time been a supporter of ROKPA, a charity which is run by unpaid individuals to support Enlighs language training in Tibet. Cactus has successfully recruited a number of teachers for this position, but we urge you to contact ROKPA directly to find out the latest situation there. Their website also contains a lot of useful information and case studies.

VSO   VSO is another well-known and respected organisation which, whilst being seemingly 'governmental and bureaucratic', does take excellent care of its volunteers. In teaching terms, VSO is generally looking for teacher trainers rather than just English teachers, to be able to train local teachers in places like Africa and China. Again, the website will be the best starting point. Assignments typically last 2 years and financial support is offered to cover the cost of materials and repatriation.
